The latest entry in the Octopath Traveler franchise is Octopath Traveler 0. Thanks to Square Enix we got to check out the game! Here is our review of Octopath Traveler 0 for the Nintendo Switch 2.
In previous Octopath Traveler games, you picked one of several already made characters to play as to start and then could go back later and play one of the others. In Octopath Traveler 0, you create a single character and then you become that character for the rest of the game. Your character lives in a small town and when something bad happens to that town, you go onto rebuild it and also can decide who exactly you want to go after first for revenge.
The story in Zero still has multiple paths, however with only one main character the narrative feels more focused and more interesting than previous games.
As for the gameplay, well, if you played the other two, then you’ll be in for a similar experience with only one major new gameplay addition and some minor tweaks to the battle system.
Octopath Traveler 0 plays a lot like the first two games in the series. The battle system is almost exactly the same, though with more party members available to use and exploration through the world map and towns is similar too. You can still hire people to help you out in battles but also you get more people that join as regular members of your party and can swap between characters in battle.
There is one major addition to the gameplay though. In Octopath Traveler 0, you are rebuilding a town and can place buildings and other objects. So this game offers the regular jrpg experience and a bit of a simulation experience too. Not only do you rebuild the town, but you can recruit people to come live in your town while exploring the larger world.
You don’t have to played the previous games in the series enjoy Octopath Traveler 0. Much like the Final Fantasy series, each game stands on its own. This game may be the best one yet because everything we’ve seen before feels refined and the new town building is a great addition. The graphics, while also looking similar to previous games, look better ever too.
The graphics in Octopath Traveler 0 are really great. There’s so much detail to the characters and the environments in this game. The HD-2D style never gets old.
Also the voice acting in this game really good too! Octopath Traveler 0 is a really wonderful game overall.
Octopath Traveler 0 is the best of this series so far. The gameplay is fun, especially with the addition of town building, and the graphics and audio are fantastic. We’re also very pleased with the more focused storyline too. If you liked the previous games in this series, then you’ll need to play this one. If you’ve never played an Octopath Traveler game, this is a great place to start.
