Fantasy Flight Games Shuttering Descent: Legends of the Dark Series
Descent: Legends of the Dark and Betrayer’s War were very ambitious products that obviously didn’t connect with audiences like Fantasy Flight Games wanted. As much as I love the games and the stories they told, it was obvious from lackluster sales of the game that most people were not investing in this experience like the developers had hoped. These are big box games with lots of overhead, and if Fantasy Flight Games and asmodee were not seeing a good return, this news was inevitable.

Fantasy Flight Games released a statement about the end of Descent, and had the following to say about why the game was being cancelled:
Simply put, the game is too expensive to make. Between ever-increasing manufacturing costs, lengthy and pricey app development timelines, and global economic shifts making everything more expensive to produce, it became abundantly clear that continuing to make this game is just not feasible. This is far from the outcome we wanted—again, we all love this game and hoped to see it grow for years to come—but even if we were to sell every last copy, we would still ultimately be doing so at a loss. In a fiercely-competitive board game industry, that simply isn’t sustainable, and because of circumstances outside of FFG’s control, there are no adjustments we could make that could lower costs enough to continue printing the game.
What makes this news even more sad for me is that if I spin around in my office chair, I can see the next scenario of Betrayer’s War on the table behind me, ready to be finished. My father-in-law and I have been going through the game again recently, and are again, as we did before, enjoying ever second of the experience. Are you disappointed by this news? I sure am!
