Getting Back Into Star Wars Shatterpoint
When Star Wars Shatterpoint first launched my father-in-law and I were all into it. Asmodee Canada and Atomic Mass sent us box after box, and we reviewed them all and got them all painted. As time has gone by, we’ve gotten pretty busy on the website, which is a good problem to have. We are working with more publishers and designers than ever, so we cannot always cover everything. So for about 9 months, we took a break from Star Wars Shatterpoint.
Recently, we decided to get back into the game to see what has all changed, and once again Atomic Mass and Asmodee Canada sent over a package of boxes so we could try out some of the newer characters and see how they play. We will go into depth on some of our favorite characters and boxes over the next few weeks, but wanted to take a look-back at the experience before our break, and of course after.
For me personally, tabletop war games are not generally my thing, and the only reason I gave this one a shot was because I’m a big Star Wars fan. And Shatterpoint had a great ruleset that wasn’t all that complicated to understand. I spent more time trying to learn the squads I created than I did trying to learn the rules for the game. Since the game launched, new mission cards have been released providing different ways to play the game, as well as providing bonuses when drawing the Shatterpoint cards.
One issue we had early on was that there wasn’t enough (official) terrain for us to use, and the game lacked cool terrain for some of the boxes that were released. Some of our last reviews before our break was the Ewok boxes – how cool would Endor terrain have been for that release? At Canada Plays 2025, we spoke with Atomic Mass at length and learned that new terrain is coming for Star Wars Shatterpoint, so we cannot wait for all of that to release.
What has happened over the last few months was the release of new and varied characters. Everyone once in a while you encounter characters that play fairly similar to other characters, but looking over the new units we got in our boxes recently got me excited to get them painted and down to the table. There are some really nifty characters that we are going to showcase, and I cannot wait to try them out in an actual match.
What I’ve learned since taking a break from Shatterpoint is that Shatterpoint wasn’t taking a break at all. SO many boxes have been released since we last played; for reference, we submitted a laundry list of boxes we would have loved to review to Asmodee – I think the list had 13 or 14 boxes on it, which is a testament to how much Shatterpoint we missed in a 9 month period!
I just finished playing a round of Shatterpoint, and had an absolute blast. With these new boxes here to review, I cannot wait to dive back into this experience!
