Do You Need a Board Game Table?
I’ve been sitting here, refreshing the tracking information for my new board game table, which should be arriving later today. It got me thinking, our board game table. Something people really need, or are they just something that are nice to have for board game players? A board game table is definitely a luxury item, but it is one that most board game players really want to have. Now that I have one coming, I’m curious to see how beneficial this table will be over my old kitchen table that I’ve been using for a number of years now.
Before I continue, it’s worth noting that the table about to receive was supplied to us by Box King. You might’ve remembered that a few weeks ago, we reviewed the Box Throne board game shelf. We thought it was a great product, it was excellently manufactured, and it looks great in the board game room. I’m hoping the table will look just as great.
Nobody needs a board game table, but there are definite benefits to having one. I play a lot of games, some for review and some for fun, and oftentimes I don’t get a game finished prior to another game needing to be played. This generally happens with legacy style games or campaign games. For example, I would love to leave my copy of The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era open and unboxed and ready to play on my table.
However, whenever something else needs to be reviewed, I need to pack that game up prior to putting a new game down. With the recessed play area, and the wonderful wood toppers, I can have two games set up on my table at the same time. As a reviewer, this is actually a really great benefit. However, I would argue that if you are not into campaign or legacy games I’m not sure having two games set up at once is something you’re gonna benefit from. In that case, it nullifies the two games at once argument for why someone needs a board game table.
There are reasons to have a boardgame table, though. It’s nice to have a table where pieces aren’t gonna fall off where the recess play area will keep everything contained. If you have pets like a cat who likes to climb up on the table and bat stuff around you don’t have to be worried that stuff‘s gonna end up on the floor if you leave the game set up overnight. A lot of tables also have wonderful accessories, things like card trays and token trays. These can help with organization and make your play area much cleaner and easier to manage.
At the very least, a board game table does give you a dedicated space to play games. That being said, you can purchase a regular table from IKEA and get the exact same functionality, that is a table that holds your game. So I think I’ve answered the question adequately that you DO NOT need a board game table.
But…
Listen, I’ve never owned a board game table before, and this will be the first. I am so excited to get this thing set up, and to try it out. Be sure to stick around for our full review of the BoxKing Project Ironside 2.0 table!
