Descent: Legends of the Dark Still Fantastic
I just recently got back into Descent: Legends of the Dark campaign with my father-in-law and I’m beginning to remember why I love this game so much. I recently watched a bunch of reviews of the base game and the expansion, and they were less than spectacular. While I recognize the issues people have, the gameplay and story remains compelling to me, and makes me wonder if Act 3 will ever see the light of day.

Version 1.0.0
Recent announcements from Fantasy Flight Games makes me think Act 3 of Legends of the Dark is a pipe dream I’m never going to see. The company has scaled back their productions on some products, and are leaning heavily into Star Wars: Legion, Marvel Crisis Protocol, and Star Wars Unlimited. Other properties from Fantasy Flight Games are getting released – a new edition of Arkham Horror: The Card Game just released. We have a copy and will be reviewing it soon. So that does give me hope for Descent Act 3.
According to my app, I’ve logged about 61 hours into Descent so far, and yes some of that is spent in town deciding what to upgrade, what to build, etc. But that has been 61 hours of fun, doing it with my father-in-law, and expanding our characters and world. It has been a great journey as we uncover the world of Terrinoth, the people that inhabit it, and the darkness that engulfs it. The gameplay is still clever dozens of hours later, and I forgot how much tactical strategy exists.
Our last scenario had us moving a bridge mechanism and raising and lowering a bridge. It was incredibly clever, and with 9 enemies on the table at the same time, we used the bridge to our advantage, cutting off direct routes to our heroes by moving the bridge. It was equal parts dice rolling and fighting, along with tactical movement to stay one step ahead of the horde. We finished our objective with 5 enemies still left on the table, all because we used thought and tactical maneuvers to avoid these enemies.
It’s been well over a year since I last took Descent out of the box, but we have hopped back into it like we never left. It’s a really clever system that is easy to remember, and very easy to pick right back up again. If you love a good dungeon crawl, I think Descent is a fantastic option!
