Dewan Components Overview and Impressions
Dewan from Space Cowboys came out of nowhere for me, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The artwork on the front of the box was outstanding, though, and the promise of little wooden camp tokens on the back of the box was enough to draw me in. Space Cowboys always does a great production, and Dewan is no exception to this!

First and foremost, two little things about punching the game and getting it sorted in the box. The punchboards in the box had a little notch in the top corner, which made removing them really easy. That’s a big plus in my books, even if it’s just a minor thing. Second, the punchboards serve a secondary purpose after you have all the pieces removed from them; they lay in the bottom of the box to push the insert up so it’s all flush when everything is put away. This makes storing the game vertically a very real option, and saves those old punchboards from going into the trash or recycling. That’s pretty smart, and an environmentally conscious decision.
Speaking of punchboards, all the tiles in the game are really nice. They are the perfect thickness, and although you don’t handle them often, they feel really sturdy. The pieces you do handle more often – the fish tokens and the berry tokens – are also great quality, albeit a bit small. I understand they need to be that size as they are laid on the central board for claiming, but a slightly larger tile – fish especially – would have been nice!

The player colours used here are unique, but yet beautiful. And each player will get a collection of unique looking tents that will represent their camps on the central board. These wooden tents are also screen printed with a little bit of design, and while this doesn’t change how the game plays, it gives it a really nice table presence that will make people stop and look.
What I enjoy most about this production, though, is the dual layered player boards. First and foremost, they didn’t come bent out of the box, which is generally unusual for dual layered boards. The player boards have little slots for all the camps, and larger slots for the tiles you’ll be collecting. The quality here is top notch, some of the best dual layered boards available! The game also has a small deck of cards, and the quality on these was actually better than anticipated, especially sine the production is already SO good and the game has an MSRP of 39.99 CAD!

The game also includes a cardboard insert, and while it’s not the best – sometimes tiles or cards slide beneath the partitions into other spots, and there are some weird angles used to attempt to make it easier to remove tiles – I’m always glad when a board game company at least tries. And if the insert isn’t for you, simply remove it, bag everything up, and toss it all into an empty box.
Overall, Dewan has a fantastic production, and is well worth the 39.99 CAD you’ll be spending to acquire it. The game itself is damn fun too, but stay tuned for that review soon!
