Star Wars: Super Teams Board Game Review
We have been getting a ton of Star Wars games over the past year, and I’m here for it. I love Star Wars, and while I’m always worried we are bound to get a really bad game with a great IP, that doesn’t seem to have happened yet. Star Wars: Super Teams looked to be that game, a half backed experience banking on success because of its IP. That couldn’t be further from the truth. While Star Wars: Super Teams isn’t breaking any gameplay barriers, it’s a quick game that’s a lot more fun than you might think.

In Super Teams, players will be playing cards each round to move ships of different colours around the board. What ships you control or what team you might be on it dependent on the number of players, but outside of a 3-Player game, all 8 ships will be in play.
The cards in your hand are not just for your ships; you will have a random assortment of movement cards with various numbers and other symbols (bonuses) on them. On a players turn, they must play a card and move a ship, which won’t always be their own. That means if you pull a 5 movement card for the other team, there is a lot of strategy on when you should play that card.

It’s the board and the bonus cards that build into the strategy of the game. Since you have to play one card per turn each round, if you have a really good movement card for the other team, you still need to play it. So when do you do that? Perhaps when the other teams card is on an Asteroid Field space. Then, regardless of what number is played, the ship only moves one space. Or, perhaps you have a bonus card that does something negative to the other team. Or even more, perhaps you use the 5 movement card to land your opponent on a Maw space, sending them backwards on the board.
There is a ton of strategy here, and determining what cards to play and when is not as easy as it appears. It is the simplicity of how the game works that makes it so approachable for all players, but it’s the layers of strategy that will keep me and my gaming group coming back time and time again. A solid production helps as well. While the cards are nothing to write home about – I’d actually sleeve these, if I were you! – the little plastic ships are nicely detailed and rally gorgeous out on the board. There is also a nice variety of ships, which will appeal to longtime fans of the franchise.

Star Wars: Super Teams is an insanely simplistic game that is perfect as a filler option on board game nights. But simplistic doesn’t mean worthless here, as Super Teams is one of the better quick racing games I’ve played in the last little while. And bonus, my kids can play too!
