Thunder Road Vendetta: Carnival Of Chaos Components Overview and Impressions

We recently took a look at the components for Thunder Road Vendetta: Maximum Chrome which included the base game of Thunder Road Vendetta and the first 4 expansions. This 5th expansion was released after Maximum Chrome was released, and took the game in a brand new, yet probably more chaotic (if possible) direction. For a full rundown on Thunder Road Vendetta, be sure to check out our previous articles. But for now…let’s head into the thunder dome!

Thunder Road Vendetta has, until this release, been about racing across a track, dodging obstacles and other cards. With Carnival of Chaos, the design team has introduced a battle arena instead of a track, and the last car standing wins.

All the things we loved about the Maximum Chrome release are present here. Punchboards that are amazing to punch, cardboard that is thick enough and sturdy enough to hold up for dozens of play sessions, and fantastic miniature cars and choppers that increase the table presence 10 fold. I didn’t write this when we reviewed the original components, but it could have been so easy if Restoration Games opted to use cardboard tiles for the various cards, instead of actual plastic cars. Hats off to them!

The new boards included in Carnival of Chaos are outstanding, and in my opinion more impressive than the boards included in the base game and other expansions. The design of the board and the iconography is very good, and while I’ve enjoyed the few races I’ve played so far in Thunder Road Vendetta, I’m guessing I will like this even more.

This version also includes a new, coloured set of vehicles – you can now play this, and the base game along with the expansions, with 5 players. One more player, yes, but 3-4x the chaos? I think so. The new set comes with everything you need as well, including the small, medium and large cars, the chopper, and the associated coloured tiles and 4 dice. I love this new purple colour, which seems to be the theme of this release.

The other purple colour flows through the brand new Turbo Tina deck, which will be used when playing in the arena. Crazy stuff will happen when Tina joins the party, and based on what I read from the Turbo Tina cards, it’s going to make the fun and chaos of Thunder Road Vendetta even more….chaosy? That’s not a word, but I’m sticking to it!

Honestly, while the other expansions seem to just add more stuff for the base game, this is a brand new tweak on the tried and tested mechanics of the original, and I’m here for something a little different. Either way, the production is just as good as previous Thunder Road titles, and I wouldn’t expect anything less.
