Board Game Storage Solutions – BoxKing Gaming, IKEA, and more!

Storing a ton of board games can be a lot of work, and perhaps I have more board games than the average person because of how many we review here on the site. That said, we are always looking for new board game storage solutions, and we have a number of them that work really well for us.

IKEA Kallax Shelf

The Kallax units from IKEA are a great storage solution for board games specifically because of their size. One Kallax unit can easily hold 4 regular board game boxes – Ticket to Ride size for reference. Four boxes stored upright isn’t to tight in the space, and there is a little room above the games to help with pulling them out. IKEA shelves have the benefit of being inexpensive and fairly easy to assemble. You can also get a number of accessories for these shelves as well, including dividers that turn a Kallax unit into two smaller spaces – great for small box games – as well as a drawer unit that can be installed in a unit for storing your board game accessories.

Boxking Gaming Box Throne and Game Pillar

We won’t be shy about it – we love BoxKing Gaming and the products they provided to us. Their storage solutions, however, also make a lot of sense. We have only used the BoxThrone so far, but hope to review the Game Pillar as well in the future. The benefit of the BoxThrone is that it is also modular, allowing you to create shelves the extact size you need them. Even better, each game gets its own shelf in this system, so for those games that NEED to be stored horizontally, You don’t need to remove entire stacks to get that one game out you want. A Kallax is great for storing games vertically – it sucks for anything else. That is where our BoxThrone comes in handy.

Other Storage Solutions / Amazon

My wife and I have found a number of other storage solutions that work for us as well. We purchased photo boxes to store our small box games. We have removed a ton of weird sized boxes by migrating those games to these photo boxes. It probably ruins the resale value of the games, but we figured the cost of these games was so low we probably didn’t care about the resale value.

The other solution we invested in was a spinning book shelf tower. These shelves are pretty common in libraries, but did you know they make a great small box game storage solution? We have a shelf that is 5 tall and 4 per level. With an average of 4 small box games per shelf, this provides 70-80 games worth of storage, which is huge. On top of that, we were able to put games as large as 8 inches square on those shelves, so even slightly larger games will fit!

What are your favourite storage solutions?
