Dorfromantik: The Perfect Holiday Game

Dorfromantik is one of those games that I could play almost anytime, but I find it especially enjoyable during the holidays. It is such a relaxing experience, and easy to teach almost anyone. With a plate of snacks over Christmas, we dove back into Dorfromantik head first, and we had a blast.

Value in board games can often be hard to determine. At what point is a board game a good deal? We just finished game number 14 of Dorfromantik last night, and we are still chasing a few of the games objectives. Even 14 games in, we have yet to get 300 points to unlock the hot air balloon. We’ve been crazy close, but are still working towards that goal. And while the game is very relaxing, there is still something to play for each round.

In Dorfromantik, players will be putting down tiles to build train and river routes, forests, cities, and fields. There are always three task tiles on the table with a specific number between 4 and 7, and the goal is to create a connected area of those tiles to match the number on the task tile. When you finish a task tile, you flip a new task tile and keep going.

The game is easy to play, and it’s pretty relaxed, but there are still strategic decisions to be made. While Dorfromantik might feel like a solo game at times, I always enjoy talking strategy with others at the table. And it always feels good when you can turn a 4 tile forest into a 5 tile forest into a six tile forest with relatvie ease. That is good planning, and you’ll be doing that alot.

Dorfromantik can feel incredibly lucky at the same time. Sometimes you just need one tile to finish up a task tile and to get a new one, but it just won’t flip for you. It could be an easy to get tile too, just it’s not in the stack where you need it. Even in those situations, though, we feel you eventually break through. And while we are currently only working towards 300 points, there are tons of objectives we have already cleared.

This is a good one – check it out!
