Moonrollers Components Overview and Impressions

If you’ve been reading our site for a while, you know we absolutely love most of what IV Studio releases each year. In fact, we’ve heralded them as our favourite designer two years running, which is a pretty impressive feat. We love the universes IV Studio creates, with Moonrakers being one of our favourites. Moonrollers is set in that same universe, and as a gaming group that loves dice games, we really wanted to check this one out. IV Studio sent it over, and we wasted no time!

When you get your copy of Moonrollers you might be surprised by how little there is in the box. Included for everyone – whether you own Moonrakers or not – are some promo cards that you can put into your Moonrakers game. While some may wonder how much these 15 or so cards added to the cost of their dice experience; I was just excited. If you enjoyed the look of Moonrakers than you are going to like what you see in Moonrollers. The same artistic style and colour pallets are used here, from the character cubes to the look of the card. Card quality, as it is in all IV Studio releases, is phenomenal. There is an official card sleeve pack you can purchase for this game, but if you don’t plan to play your copy weekly, I doubt you’d need them.

There are also a bunch of cardboard hazard tokens in the game. These are a nice thickness and punched from the punchboard really easily. I’m always a bit nervous that I might ruin some of my game pieces when I punch cardboard for games, but that wasn’t a concern here.

Dice! Moonrollers comes with quite a few dice, and I’m excited to report that these are NOT printed despite being custom. I’ve been told by many designers that it just isn’t feasible to make games with custom, etched dice. I have a bunch of games that we love that are now ruined because of screen printed dice that inevitably wear off. To that end, I’m glad that a game like Moonrollers didn’t go down that path, so I know my game will be perfectly fine years down the road.

Overall, the production here is phenomenal. Take everything I mentioned above and add in a dual layered score tracker, and you know IV Studio means business when they release a title. Production wise, Moonrollers gets an A+!
