Disney Lorcana: Whispers in the Well Set Review
I think it was going to be hard for Ravensburger and Disney Lorcana to follow-up on the Fabled release. Despite my desire to not see so many reprinted cards, there was some fantastic artwork, a great franchise in The Goofy Movie added to the mix, and one of the best Illumineers Trove’s I ever seen. While there are some drawbacks this time around – Illumineers Trove has come back down to earth, in line with previous releases – Whispers in the Well is compelling for one reason: a new card type!

Our review of the accessories will be a separate article going up soon, so keep your eyes on the site for more details. We will post a link here as well when it is live!
While the new card type has the trait “Whisper” I’m probably going to end up calling these cards, Whisper cards. And they look amazing. Each one has a unique border that is suppose to represent a torn out lore page. Each card also has a unique artistic style that shows characters coming out of a bright light. They look so amazing, but it’s the new card characteristic that I think could be game changing.

Whisper tagged cards all have the same core idea: you’ll tuck a card beneath these cards, and then for each tucked card / if there is a tucked card, the character can do something special. That might give them more power for singing songs, allow them to draw cards, quest for extra lore, and a variety of other benefits. THat said, without a tucked card, these cards aren’t doing you a whole lot of good, so you need to be ok with drawing cards blindly off your deck and placing them below cards. The risk here, of course, is that you’ll stash a card you really want in your hand. For the benefits you can get, it might just be worth it.
There are only a few of these whisper cards per ink type, but I’m having a really good time trying to build decks that will make these characters shine. This isn’t groundbreaking like when Ravensburger introduced Locations into Lorcana, but it does give players one more thing to work with when it comes to competitive deck building.

Speaking of locations, after taking a short hiatus, they are back in Whispers in the Well. I’ve been pretty vocal that I’ve never been a huge fan of locations, but for those who have enjoyed playing them in the past, there are a few new ones to choose form this time around.
Ever once in a while, Lorcana drives their overarching – albeit very loose – story forward, and that is what this set is doing. Heroes travel to the Inwell Caverns where they encounter the Whispers, hence the cards we spoke about previously. For those interested in this overarching story, it’s fun to see it manifest through the set and specific cards. It’s not something that interests me personally, but I still see the value in Ravensburger pushing the narrative.

My desire to collect this entire sets goes even deeper when you see the design team doing an even deeper dive into Disney’s past: anyone up for Black Cauldron cards? Who saw that coming!
Whispers in the Well is one of Lorcana’s best releases to date, and keeps me hopeful for the future of the franchise. There have been releases that were less than spectacular in my opinion, but the promise of something like this on the horizon is what keeps me coming back again and again. And while Ravensburger was kind enough to set us up with a booster box of Whispers in the Well, I’ve put my money where my mouth is by getting 2 additional boxes as well. This set is that good, I need to collect it all!
