Disney Lorcana: Whispers in the Well Accessories Review
While I’ve already written at length why Whispers in the Well is one of the best Disney Lorcana releases to date, it’s hard to follow-up the Fabled accessories release. While I think the Illumineers Trove has come back down to earn – so it’s more in line with releases previous to Fabled – the playmats and starter decks continue to impress.

The decks, specifically, are some of the best starter decks in recent memory. The Judy Hopps and Nick Wylde boast a ton of Detective cards which when played, work really well together. It’s a great deck for new players, in my opinion, as it keeps the focus on the characters in play and how they mess, as opposed to pushing forward by trying to play powerful characters (which can take a bit of practice). This Sapphire/Steel deck is fairly competitive as well when compared to previous releases, and while it won’t stand up to a properly constructed custom deck, it will work in a starter-deck only environment.

On the flip side, the Simba and Meg deck definitely leans into the new cards released in this set, the Whisper cards. Whisper cards have a new ability called Boost which gives the characters special abilities when a card has been played beneath them. These abilities are wide ranging, but are fun to play around with for experienced players. I’d recommend the Detective deck over this one for new players, though, as I think this requires an extra level of complexity in order to play it well. Players will want to really use the Simba Whisper ability, which allows you to look at the top card of your deck, and if it is a character, play it for free.

Artwork on this release’s playmats is phenomenal. I’ve always been impressed with the Disney Lorcana playmats, as they have the uncanny ability of almost always picking the best art from the set. While I have my personal favourite playmats from previous releases, it’s fun to get these ones to the table when having a big game night. It is fun watching people gravitate to one playmat or another, but when we played over the weekend, the two new playmats featuring Mickey and Jasmine were instant hits.

Compared to most Lorcana releases, the Illumineers Trove is just par for the course. You get a set of colour dice for damage, a nice lore counter, and card separators so you can organize your cards by Ink type. I always recommend Lorcana players pick up at least one Trove per release to store that sets cards, and I think there is a great value in these boxes. The dice and lore counters alone trump the stuff you get in starter decks! Unfortunately, the Fabled Illumineers Trove was absolutely phenomenal with different coloured dice for each ink type, and holographic card separators and lore counter. I absolutely recommend Whispers in the Well’s Illumineers Trove; I’m just sorry that it had to follow Fabled!
Overall, it is yet another great release for Disney, and I’m once again really excited for what is coming next.
