Excited for New Animal Crossing Content, But…

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of my favourite Nintendo Switch games of all time – perhaps it was COVID, or perhaps it was just a solid game, but when this game launched on the Nintendo Switch, I played it for hundreds of hours. When Nintendo announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game, and new content coming, I was really excited, but also just a bit disappointed.

First and foremost, I think it’s good to acknowledge two things. First, this content update coming in January is completely free; and second, the upgrade cost of going from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 version is only $4.99 USD or $6.99 CAD. That is phenomenal, and hopefully a price that will be a bit more common with Nintendo Switch 2 versions of games!

Everything shown off in the update looks amazing. I look forward to decorating hotel rooms, I look forward to interacting with new villagers, and of course I’m excited about brand new items, and lots of them. Perhaps the most exciting update coming is the ability to craft stacks of items, instead of doing things one at a time. Making fish bait will be incredibly simple now, which means I can go shark hunting all summer long!

Yet, despite my excitement for what was coming – who doesn’t want those Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda crossovers! – I can’t help but be disappointed that this probably signals the reality that we will not be getting a new Animal Crossing anytime soon. I wrote about this before, but I will reiterate it here again: the sooner Nintendo gets a brand new Animal Crossing on Nintendo Switch, the longer they can support it and the more money they can make. We all want something new, and I believe I’m not alone being a bit disappointed that this signals a new entry is probably years away.
