Illiterati from Gap Closer Games is one of our favourite word games ever, and we still get a ton of play out of it all these years later. We reviewed that game way back when it launched, and highly recommended it. Now, Gap Closer Games is launching another campaign for a brand new expansion for the game, Red Herrings & White Roses.

Featuring the art of Miguel Coimbra (7 Wonders, Small World) Red Herrings & White Roses introduces a modular gameplay packed with brand new content. Take the fight against Viridia Vilebrew, the Alchemical Countess in the realm of Marquee or venture to the idyllic Novella Meadows under the manipulative hand of Don Fabio Loveless, the Heart Throbber. Apart from battling a different “super-villain” (whom we call The Unwritten), each realm comes with new book types and allies (the Protagonists) allowing you to unlock new abilities in the fight against illiteracy.
Illiterati is a fast paced and fun word game where players will be using letters on the table to create words and hopefully bind books. Books have specific word requirements that players need to meet, but you want to make sure you are using up all your letters, regardless of whether you actually bind your book or not. That means you will work together to create words, attempting to bind books but ultimately just trying not to lose! And watch out – the Illiterati is always watching, and villains are going to make an appearance and make your experience so much worse. Can you survive together to bind the books?
Since launching Illiterati back in 2022, we have been blown away by it’s continued success, so making an expansion was a no-brainer. With the help of over 150 playtesters, we feel we have put together a truly unique experience. There are so many directions we want to take this franchise, so this really is just the beginning!
