Fabled – Disney Lorcana’s NEW Jumping In Spot

Our good friends at Ravensburger sent over a booster box of Fabled, the latest release in the Disney Lorcana franchise. I was super excited for this release simply because it featured a good number of cards from the Goofy Movie. As one of my favourite movies of all time, having Petey, Powerline, Max and more was an exciting prospect. By the time I opened up all 24 packs, I think I had almost all the Goofy Movie cards. But something felt off to me as a longtime fan, and while it might be a negative for me, it’s a positive for newer players.

Ravensburger has always said they would reprint the more popular Disney Lorcana cards and make them publicly available for everyone. I figured this meant a second reprint of the First Chapter, or the first couple sets at least, but instead the company has opted to relaunch some cards alongside new cards in their regularly planned set releases. This is good for plates who missed the first year or so of Disney Lorcana, but perhaps a letdown for longtime fans.

I couldn’t help but feel that pack after pack seemed to be stuff full of cards I already had, just instead of a number 1 to reference set one, there was a 9 to reference set nine. It was fun to relive some of those awesome art cards I haven’t looked at for a few years, but to not have a complete set of new cards was a bit disappointing.

I know Pokemon did this a few years ago, but it felt different when they did it. Pokemon essentially relaunched the original set of cards when it released Pokemon Evolution, yet these packs came out 15+ years after the originals, not a 1 or 2. And as a longtime collector of Pokemon, reliving these original cards in a new set was really exciting and incredibly nostalgic. Not even enough time has passed since set 1 to make these nostalgic for me now.

I’ve sounded fairly negative, but I know there is a flipside to this that is important for others. Not everyone has been opening and collecting Disney Lorcana since day one, and there are thousands, perhaps 10s of thousands of people who have never owned any of these cards. Even those who dabbled a little bit in the First Chapter are probably missing some of these more important deck building cards. To that end, I completely understand the thought behind the Fabled release, and in understanding it, it makes my disappointed just a bit less.

I’d still recommend a Booster Box or two for longtime fans, though, as Ravensburger has included new rarities this time around. While it’s unlikely you’ll get an Iconic card in your box, you are guaranteed at least one of the new Epic rarity cards, and they are really cool to look at. Between my two booster boxes – one provided for this review, and one purchased – I was able to snag 5 of these new epic cards, all of them better than the last. They are some of the nicest cards I have in my Lorcana collection, and every time we pulled one from a pack, there was that excitement you only hope to get when opening trading cards.

Fabled is where Ravensburger sees a lot of new fans jumping into the experience, I think. As the product is pushed more and more, especially at Disney Parks and on Disney Cruise Line, the number of prospective new fans is growing. By including some of those original cards in this release, people who missed out on years of Lorcana get to feel like they’ve been along for the entire ride. Further, the cards Ravensburger chose to relaunch are ones I always wanted for my decks, so that’s a bonus as well.

I definitely had some initial disappointment after my first few packs: I had a bunch of rereleased cards, some of which I have a dozen or more, and didn’t get any of the new Epic cards. But after tearing through 48 packs, it was an overall pleasant experience. The Goofy Movie cards are phenomenal, and the new Epic cards are great additions to my collection. I think despite the number of reprint cards, this is still a set worth investing in.
