My First Unlock! – Duck Stories Review

The Unlock! series is one of our favourite escape room style games to play at home with friends and family. Over the years, we have reviewed many of these boxes, our personal favourite being the Star Wars themed release. When Unlock! Kids was first released, we were quite excited to take this experience and play it with our 10 year old at the time. Still, it was a bit complicated for our younger son who was about 4 years old. Now at seven, we have found that My First Unlock! – Duck Stories is the perfect launching point into the Unlock! Kids series of games.

My First Unlock! – Duck Stories comes with three unique scenarios for kids to play through. While my seven year old would have struggled on his own, his 12 year old brother was the perfect person to walk him through all three experiences. Each provides a unique objective and goal to complete. These stories are easy to follow, vibrant, and incredibly child friendly.

The game has a number of unique components that help kids solve the cases. A cardboard duck standee will be the central focus of the game, and like in Unlock! you will be matching symbols on cards with the standee to obtain new cards. There are also a handful of little tiles that will also come into play, representing items and more.

As an adult sitting at the table, there is nothing overly complex here, and almost no room for failure as you make your way through the 15-20 minute-ish experience. I firmly believe, though, that the aim of My First Unlock! – Duck Stories are not to frustrate or cause confusion for young players, but to foster a safe space to make decisions and use logic to solve puzzles. THe simplicity of the puzzles means there is almost no room for error, but that’s what makes this so great – no matter how they get to the decision they need to make, that decision will always be right when matching the tiles.

With three unique scenarios to complete, the difficulty gets a bit tougher with each passing case. The colourful world created with the cards is great to look at, fun to explore, and exciting to conquer. This is the perfect launching point into the Unlock! universe, and one we highly recommend.
