Honest Reviews. Smarter Play

One Month Later – Is Project Ironside 2.0 Worth It?

We’ve been playing on our Project Ironside 2.0 board game table from BoxKing Gaming for about a month now, and as I promised when we originally reviewed the table, I’m back to provide a quick (although not all that different) update. Is Project Ironside 2.0, or any board game table for that matter, worth the investment?

In most cases my answer would still be a resounding NO since board game tables are so bloody expensive. But Project Ironside isn’t an ordinary board game table, nor is it expensive. If you can buy or build an affordable board game table then I change my tune: it is most definitely worth it! And Project Ironside 2.0 is a very affordable table.

Over the past month we’ve played dozens of games on our table, both within the recessed gaming area and on the table topper. For the first week or so, my father-in-law and I left our game of Kinfire Chronicles out and on the table, and honestly we played it so much I didn’t have time for much else. So, the toppers never went on, and I began to wonder, “Are the toppers even worth it?”

Fast forward to this week and I can unequivocally say yes. First, we don’t use this table for anything (generally) other than board gaming. It’s not the same table we eat at, for example, as we have a larger dining table in our kitchen upstairs. For some, the table topper will be invaluable if they require their table to service two purposes. It wasn’t until I got home from GenCon 2025 that I realized how valuable that topper would be to me, though.

GenCon 2025 was an incredibly successful and beneficial convention for GamesReviews.com as we connected with over a dozen new review partners and brought home nearly 40 titles. Those games needed to be unboxed, photographed and reviewed, but my game of Kinfire Chronicles was still set up on the table, half way through a mission. So I grabbed the toppers, put them into position, and began working on website related things.

Before I knew it, we began reviewing some of the smaller games, so once again the topper came in handy with my Kinfire game safely tucked beneath. Fast forward to today, the day I’m writing this article, and I’ve just taken the toppers back off, finished and cleaned up Kinfire Chronicles, and got Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship setup for tonight game night. As I was putting the toppers away, I realized how beneficial they were, allowing me to save on setup and tear down time for a campaign game I was really enjoying, but hadn’t finished yet. To that end, this topper has come in handy a few times over the past month, and a few times per month means dozens per year.

So has it been worth it? Yes. Would I enjoy it had I paid for it? Absolutely. In fact, I’m looking at getting a second board game table for another gaming space we use, and while I’d love for BoxKing Gaming to sponsor us a second time, I’m guessing this one might be on my own dime! And I’m OK with that, because this table has been such a blessing to our group.

We might be in a unique situation where we review dozens of games per month and need to keep things setup for images, or in the case of campaigns, set up for a month at a time. But even when I think about playing games with my kids, or interrupting a game night for a quick snack and perhaps food-friendly game, I realize the benefits of this table extend past my job.

Honestly, BoxKing Gaming has created a fantastic product, and if you are in the market for a board game table and prefer build quality and usability over aesthetics (I think it looks good, but it’s not massively impressive like one made of wood), then I still cannot recommend Project Ironside 2.0 enough!
