Asmodee and Kids – Holiday Fun – Rhino Hero Junior

Games for kids ages 2+ can not only be difficult to find, but to play as well. Some companies struggled to find a nice balance between something educational and something fun, generally going too educational and forgetting that the experience has to be enjoyable. And while I definitely cannot play Rhino Hero Junior as a competitor alongside my young kids, it is still fun to see their brains work while having fun.

Rhino Hero Junior has three different games built into one package. But first, knowing the components is beneficial. There are flat pieces included in the game and little “tower” sections that can be put together in a 3 dimensional X. the pieces – whether flat or like a tower – are composed of two colours and a number, going from 1 through 6. This heavily factors into the games educational component for young kids.

In the first game, players will use both the flat pieces and the towers to create a path leading away from the main game board, which is double sided. Beginning with number one, players will need to match colours and sequence numbers to create a 6 card path for Rhino and Spider Monkey to follow. The trick is, they must travel together, so if you choose the right sequenced number, but the wrong matching colour, the piece goes back into the box and it’s the next players turn. And this works the other way as well, right colour, wrong sequenced number.

After laying down 6 tiles and moving Rhino and Spider Monkey along, players will return to the main board by placing “tower” pieces that MATCH the boards that were already laid. Once the duo gets back to the main board, the game is over and the players have won.

The second included game works very much similar to the first, except this time you are building the tower with all the pieces, using the flat pieces to indicated floors between levels.

The third game functions much like the second, except this time the floors are laid flat on their backs hiding the number beneath, adding in a memory component to the game. You’ll need to find the correct floor in order to build it! As well, two Spider Monkey cards will be shuffled and placed face down with the other cards. Spider Monkey will attempt to topple your buildings, so watch out!
