LEGO Announces GameBoy Set

If you grew up in the ’90s, chances are you spent countless hours glued to a Nintendo Game Boy, squinting at the green-tinted screen and blowing into cartridges like it was a sacred ritual. Now, LEGO is giving fans a chance to relive that magic—brick by brick.

This week, LEGO officially unveiled its brand-new Game Boy set, a detailed and nearly life-sized replica of the handheld console that revolutionized portable gaming. The set is part of LEGO’s growing lineup of retro tech tributes, and it’s already generating serious buzz among collectors, gamers, and nostalgic millennials.

The LEGO Game Boy set clocks in at 421 pieces and is designed to be a faithful recreation of the original 1989 model. It includes all the signature details: the iconic D-pad, the A and B buttons, the contrast and volume dials, and even a slot in the back for inserting game cartridges—yes, cartridges!

And LEGO didn’t stop there. The set comes with two build-able cartridges: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land, two of the most beloved titles from the Game Boy’s legendary library. You can even swap out the screen to reflect which game you’re “playing,” adding a fun layer of interactivity to the display.

While LEGO is often associated with kids, this set is clearly aimed at adults who grew up with the Game Boy as a constant companion. It’s part of LEGO’s “Icons” series, which celebrates cultural touchstones through intricate, display-worthy builds. The Game Boy set is recommended for ages 18 and up and is priced at $59.99—a small price to pay for a trip down memory lane.

The finished model stands about 5.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, making it a perfect desk or shelf piece for anyone who wants to show off their love for retro gaming. It doesn’t light up or make sounds, but the visual accuracy and tactile joy of building it more than make up for that.

The LEGO Game Boy set is available for pre-order now through LEGO’s official website and select retailers. It will officially launch on October 1, 2025, just in time for the holiday season. Given the popularity of previous retro sets like the LEGO NES and the Game & Watch, this one is expected to sell fast.

This release is the latest in LEGO’s ongoing collaboration with Nintendo, which has already brought fans everything from interactive Super Mario sets to the aforementioned NES console. The partnership has been a hit with fans, blending the creativity of LEGO with the timeless appeal of Nintendo’s characters and consoles.

Whether you’re a lifelong LEGO builder, a retro gaming enthusiast, or just someone who loves a good dose of nostalgia, the LEGO Game Boy set is a charming and clever way to celebrate one of the most iconic gadgets of all time.
