GOG to Not Release Controversial Horror Game Devotion

Gamers hoping to get their hands on the controversial horror game Devotion are going to have to wait a little longer. Hours after announcing that they would be selling digital copies of the game, online retailer GOG walked back their statement.

After announcing today that they would facilitate a release for Devotion, GOG has officially stated that they will no longer be honoring that commitment. The company claims that this decision was reached after hearing the concerns of numerous gamers.

For those of you who are unaware of the controversy surrounding this game, it included negative references to the president of China upon its initial release.

Content in the game referred to Chinese president Xi Jinping as Winnie the Pooh, an insult he does not take kindly. Upon this discovery, the game was review bombed on Steam until it was eventually taken down entirely.

Red Candle Games, the developer, has since apologized and was hoping to release the game with the help of GOG. However, it appears this is no longer happening, and the developer will now need to seek another avenue of release.

I’m curious to see who, if anyone, decides to carry the title. I had honestly never even heard of it or had any interest in it prior to the controversy. All of this coverage about the game may actually increase sales if Red Candle Games is able to find a willing digital storefront.
