Path of Mystery: A Brush with Death Review

Adventure games, much like Phoenix Wright or especially like Famicom Detective Agency still have an audience who enjoy them and so we see some developers try their hand at them on occasion. Path of Mystery: A Brush with Death is such an adventure game and now its on Nintendo Switch. Here’s our review!

In Path of Mystery: A Brush with Death a group of Japanese students who are part of a school detective club decide to look into an old murder for school project. They go on their school trip and find that there is a lot more to this seemingly closed case than meets the eye.

The story in Path of Mystery is very important to this game because it is the game basically. Path of Mystery is an Adventure game along the lines of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney or more recently Nintendo’s trip back to the Famicom Detective Club.

If you don’t like Path of Mystery’s story than you won’t like the game. We thought the story was pretty good, though sometimes it got a bit distracted by playing up the childish behavior of its student detectives a bit much. Its par for the course for anime or anime

inspired stories though.

Be warned though, there isn’t too much actual gameplay to be had with this game. You make choices and get points for if you made the right choices and get graded but thats most of the gameplay. There is a section that opens up that lets you “explore” the town a bit more and find hidden objects. The coolest thing you can do is this mode is play two cool retro inspired mini-games, one is a neat Asteroid-like shooter and the other is a combination of Pac-man and Dig Dug. Both are neat, although the Asteroid one is probably the best.

A for graphics, well, the game is mostly static drawings that move a little bit when the character’s talk. There is some cool animation in the game with the opening movie and in other places, like the TV show like intro. Its not the most impressive game graphically, but still is a pretty neat game.

Version 1.0.0

Path of Mystery is a very old school-like Japanese adventure game. If you enjoyed Famicom Adventure Club, then you’ll like this game. If not, well, then this isn’t going to be your game. Its definitely an acquired taste but we’re happy that games like this are still being made!
