Ice and Idols Components Overview and Impressions

Inside Up Games rarely misses when it comes to their production quality, and Ice and Idols is no exception to this. That said, this game has a lot more going on than other Inside Up Games titles, so while there are more ways to impress me, there are also more ways to fail. How good do I think this production is? Let’s take a look!

The Ice and Idols box is FULL of plastic, and I say that in the best way possible. Plastic base for the tiles, tiles for the paths within the temple, and little plastic walls to put on those tiles. Getting everything unboxed, sorted, and put together took a fair bit of time, so make sure you get this game setup long before you plan to play it at your next board game night! The quality of these plastic pieces is phenomenal. They are thick enough to feel sturdy, but not too thick and take up a lot of room in the box. In fact, I was shocked by how small the box was compared to how much game there seems to be when it is all set up.

The game has a bunch of dual layered boards as well – one for each player and a central board where players will be placing their colour cubes and earning rewards. The quality of the dual layered boards is great – I love that Inside Up Games chose to use a board with a ‘hinge” instead of straight dual layered boards. Traditional dual layered boards tend to warp because of the gluing process, but the flip-style boards that are held together with double sided tape are a bunch better alternatives in my opinion. And once they are secured together, I don’t even notice the difference!

The punchboard pieces are fantastic as well; they are nice and thick, and feel great to handle. The idols, especially, will get handled a lot, so I’m glad to see that these were not only really detailed and unique, but also durable. I will note that getting some of the idols out of the punchboard took a bit of work, and you’ll want to be careful because of the unique shapes.

The card quality, like all Inside Up Games titles, is fantastic – I don’t feel the need to sleeve these!

Overall, the component quality for Ice and Idols is fantastic and I cannot wait to play this game with friends and family in the near future!
