Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary Review
There are a lot of collections coming to the Nintendo Switch lately and one of them is Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary. It might be easy to overlook this puzzle game collection among some of the more flasher games, but should you? Is Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary worth a look on Nintendo Switch?

If you’ve never played the Boulder Dash series before, the premise for the game is simple: you play as a character that digs into the ground, avoiding boulders that might crush you, and collect all the gems in a level.
Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary contains Boulder Dash, Boulder Dash 2, Boulder Dash 3, Boulder Dash 4, and brand new Boulder Dash levels with modern graphics. There is a Workshop where you can create your own levels and share them online. There is a History section that tells you about the game too.

The first Boulder Dash games have very simple, retro Atari era graphics. The new upgraded levels feature modern cartoon-like graphics. The modern levels are nothing fancy but still a big upgrade from the early days of the series.
The gameplay is simple, though very addictive and often challenging whether you’re playing the retro games or the new ones. There is a lot of strategy to be found in Boulder Dash. You must be quick and avoid the boulders in the right way or else you’ll find yourself stuck. The controls are very good in both modern and retro. The Workshop section is pretty neat. Its cool to be able to create your own Boulder Dash levels.
However, the collections’ overall presentation isn’t the greatest when compared to Digital Eclipse’s efforts.

Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary has no timeline or even games to scroll through. Instead the games are presented in the Games section, with the new levels at the top and all of the retro stuff at the bottom. Its easy to find but it looks pretty boring. The Workshop is pretty simple looking and could’ve used a bit nicer look. The history section is very slapped together, with text and some pictures but no behind the scenes material or footage.
Don’t get us wrong, the Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary collection is a lot of fun but it doesn’t feel as polished as other collections we’ve seen on Nintendo Switch. If you are looking for some good puzzle games to play, then we highly recommend it. The Workshop online will keep you busy for a long time. Its always nice to see another cool retro collection being added to Nintendo Switch.
