Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons – Review

Ravensburger’s Horrified series has always been a go-to for chill, cooperative game nights. It’s that rare gem that’s easy to learn but still keeps you on your toes with clever monster-hunting puzzles. Now, they’ve taken that winning formula and smashed it right into the legendary world of Dungeons & Dragons with Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons, and honestly? It’s a total hit for both seasoned adventurers and board game fanatics alike.

If you’re new to the Horrified universe, here’s the lowdown: you and your pals team up as heroes, racing against the clock to take down a set of terrifying monsters before they trash everything.

Each monster has its own unique quirks and puzzles you’ve got to solve to defeat them, which keeps every game feeling fresh and strategic. Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons keeps that core awesome gameplay, but sprinkles in beloved D&D lore and some seriously cool new twists.

Crack open the box and you’ll find a beautifully illustrated board that lets you roam the iconic city of Waterdeep and its treacherous Undermountain. Plus, there are some awesome sculpted miniatures for four classic D&D baddies: the fire-breathing Red Dragon, the mind-bending Beholder, the sneaky Mimic, and the elusive Displacer Beast. You get to pick from five iconic D&D classes – Bard, Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, or Wizard – each with special abilities that really crank up the strategic depth.

The biggest game-changer here is the d20. That’s right, the signature D&D die is cleverly woven into the gameplay, adding a delicious element of calculated risk and that unmistakable D&D vibe to your actions and monster encounters. This isn’t just a re-skin, folks; it genuinely feels like a D&D experience.

Just like its predecessors, Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons truly shines in its cooperative spirit. Everyone’s working together towards a common goal, making it perfect for family game nights or just chilling with friends. And the best part? You can tweak the difficulty by choosing which monsters you face, so every game offers a fresh challenge and tons of replayability.

Each monster throws a distinct puzzle your way. Take the Red Dragon, for instance: beating it means embarking on a two-part “campaign” where you first hunt down the legendary Orb of Dragonkind before baiting the beast to its hoard. The Mimic, being its tricky self, will keep you guessing, while the Beholder’s many eyes demand specific tactical moves. This variety in monster defeat keeps every single game engaging.

Turns are super straightforward: you move around the board, grab item tokens (which have different colors and values, crucial for those monster objectives), escort innocent citizens to safety, and tangle with the monstrous threats. The constant dread of the monster deck ticking down and advancing the “terror” tracker creates a real sense of urgency. It’s a non-stop balancing act: pushing forward on your objectives while trying to fend off monster attacks and protect those vulnerable NPCs.

Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a fantastic addition to the Horrified lineup. It masterfully blends the beloved cooperative puzzle-solving of the original with the rich world and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons. The d20 integration is seamless and adds a welcome layer of thematic immersion and that classic risk-reward decision-making.

While you might find slightly fewer monsters here compared to some previous Horrified titles, their increased complexity and unique ways to defeat them more than make up for it. Each monster feels distinct and genuinely challenging. It’s easy to pick up, quick to play (usually 45-60 minutes), and offers heaps of replay value with all the different monster combinations.

Whether you’re a lifelong D&D fan craving a new way to interact with iconic creatures, or a Horrified enthusiast hungry for a fresh challenge, Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is an absolute must-have. It’s proof that this series keeps evolving and impressing, delivering a truly delightful and engaging cooperative board game experience. So, roll those dice and jump into this adventure – you absolutely won’t be disappointed!
