Honest Reviews. Smarter Play

PlayStation Portal Brings Cloud Streaming to the Device

Sony has officially flipped the script on what the PlayStation Portal can do. Until now, the Portal was mostly seen as a sleek Remote Play device—a way to stream games from your PS5 when you’re away from the TV. But today’s update changes everything: cloud streaming for PS5 games is live, and it’s a big deal.

Starting today, if you’re a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber, you can stream PS5 games straight from Sony’s servers to your Portal. No console required. No downloads. No waiting for patches. Just pick a game and play.

This isn’t just for a handful of titles either. Sony says thousands of PS5 games are supported at launch, including fan favorites like Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil 4, and Grand Theft Auto V. Plus, the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog are in the mix, so you can dive into God of War Ragnarök, Cyberpunk 2077, or even revisit The Last of Us Part II Remastered without touching your console.

Before today, the Portal was great for Remote Play—but it had one big limitation: your PS5 had to be on and connected. Now, that barrier is gone. You can play anywhere with a solid Wi-Fi connection (Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps). Whether you’re traveling, chilling at a coffee shop, or just want to game without hogging the living room TV, the Portal is suddenly a true portable PlayStation.

This move also signals something bigger: Sony is leaning hard into cloud gaming. With competitors like Xbox pushing Game Pass and handhelds like the Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge gaining traction, this update puts PlayStation back in the conversation.

Sony didn’t stop at cloud play. The update brings a refreshed interface and some quality-of-life upgrades:

  • Redesigned Home Screen with clear tabs for Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search.
  • 3D Audio Support for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming sessions.
  • Passcode Lock & Network Status for added security and quick connection checks.
  • In-Game Purchases & Multiplayer Invites so you can buy content or join friends without leaving your stream.

What You’ll Need

  • A PlayStation Portal ($199.99)
  • A PlayStation Plus Premium subscription ($17.99/month or $159.99/year)
  • A stable high-speed internet connection (15 Mbps or higher recommended)

This update transforms the PlayStation Portal from a niche accessory into a serious handheld contender. It’s not just a way to mirror your PS5 anymore—it’s a gateway to the entire PlayStation ecosystem, wherever you are.
