Beyond the Grove: A Cozy Strategy Game

In an age dominated by high speed action and twitch reflexes, Beyond the Grove offers a charming and thoughtful alternative. Developed and published independently by Not a Duck, this title successfully combines the strategic depth of a strategy game all wrapped in a visually cozy, hand drawn package. For players who appreciate building the perfect machine of war more than frantically clicking during battle, this is a breath of fresh, fungal air. Get ready to battle.

The Art of Pre Battle Strategy

The core appeal of Beyond the Grove lies in its pre battle phase. As a young Grove Keeper, your goal is to assemble and deploy an army of anthropomorphic mushroom warriors and mighty Golems to fight a mysterious corruption. Unlike typical real time strategy games, once the engagement begins, your tactical input ends. The outcome depends entirely on your planning and using your resources wisely to create a mega army.

The game’s mechanical highlight is the Golem Crafting system, which allows players to fuse seven different elemental types to create over 50 distinct Golems have fun to mix and match to unlock new ones. The sheer variety in Golem types each with unique attacks, resistances, and synergies pushes the player to truly understand elemental relationships and counter composition; it’s fun seeing what you can create.

Cozy Chaos and Visual Charm

The hand drawn, warm aesthetic is arguably the game’s strongest external asset. The charming visual design, featuring friendly looking mushroom troops and earthy elemental Golems, beautifully contrasts with the chaotic battles. The accompanying acoustic, live-recorded soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly, creating an engaging atmosphere that is inviting rather than intimidating.

Beyond the Grove offers potent run customization via Blessings. With over 100 unique upgrades, players can drastically alter the trajectory of their run, discovering game breaking combos or shoring up weaknesses. This blessing system ensures high replayability, forcing players to adapt their Golem strategies based on the random traits they acquire.

A Promising Harvest

If you like strategic games with a twist this one is for you. At the end of each level you can unlock new abilities which can help in your Golem creation. As you progress it does get more challenging. Thankfully you can control the speed of the game at the top menu. If you enjoy the strategic planning and complexity of traditional strategy titles this is right up your alley. If you’re looking for a strategy game that rewards brainpower over mouse speed, go beyond the grove. I for once enjoy not having to click over and over again to build my army. Great job Not A Duck.
