New Tomb Raider Film based on Reboot

It was announced that we’d be getting a new Tomb Raider film almost two years ago, and in that time very little has been revealed. Actually, nothing has been revealed. There have been rumblings of people attached to the project – Olivia Wilde was named as Lara Croft not long ago, although it was almost immediately debunked. On the day of the general launch of the new Tomb Raider game, however, Crystal Dynamics has decided it’s the right time to reveal a little about where the film series is heading.

We’ve known that the new film was going to reboot the film series and that Angelina Jolie wouldn’t be involved. For the first time today, we’ve found out exactly why that would be. The new film is going to be based on the reboot of the game series. It’s going to be a character-driven piece, explaining how Lara Croft the young woman became Lara Croft, Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics are working closely with GK Films to ensure that the characters and world are treated as well as can be, and that the story is true to the overall franchise. They haven’t announced any cast, as of yet, but you can be sure that, whatever happens, it’ll be somebody the developers feel do justice to the character.

From Variety, who originally broke the story:

“It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise,” Gallagher said. “We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider’ films.”
