Marvel MaXimum Collection First Impressions

When we heard that a collection of retro Marvel Comics games was coming out soon,  we just had to check it out. A review code was provided to us and now we’ve seen some of what the collection has to offer. Our review isn’t ready yet but we thought we’d provide first impressions of Marvel MaXimum Collection for Nintendo Switch!

My favorite non-Nintendo game for SNES was Spider-man Maximum Carnage. I had read the comics and when a game came out for it, I just had to grab it. I had the red cart of Spider-man Maximum Carnage. It was the coolest game I had on the SNES, both in gameplay and in the way the cart looked. I played that game a bunch. So of course, when I heard it was going to be included in the Marvel MaXimum Collection, well, I absolutely freaked out. I was so excited.

And now after all these years, I get to play Spider-man Maximum Carnage again. For me, the collection is worth that game alone but it also includes X-Men the Arcade game, three versions of Captain America and Avengers, two of Spider-man/Venom Separation Anxiety, four versions of Spider-man/X-Men Arcade’s Revenge, and one of Silver Surfer. Carnage has two versions one for the SNES and one for the Mega Drive. In all, there are 13 games included in this collection.

Its a very impressive lineup. I highlighted Maximum Carnage because I had the most nostalgia for it, but I did play Captain America and the Avengers in the arcade, I played X-Men the Arcade game, and Spider-man/X-Men Arcade’s Revenge on SNES. I had never played Silver Surfer before.

I haven’t had a chance to try every version of every game out yet but what I have played of the collection so far runs well. X-Men the Arcade game’s graphics look the best. Captain America & the Avengers looks pretty good for the arcade too. Maximum Carnage probably looks better for Mega drive than SNES, but my nostalgia is still for the Super Nintendo version. I’m glad to be able to play both though.

Silver Surfer is the most unique game in the collection so far. Most of the games in this collection are beat ’em ups. Silver Surfer is a scrolling shooter, but instead of a spaceship, you have the Silver Surfer shooting at enemies! Its pretty neat but also…this game is tough! Wow. I’m using that rewind button a lot. Though I could also just turn on the cheats and I may very well do that. Many of the games have cheats and thats pretty cool.

The collection also comes with some extras, such as a music player to listen to all the game’s music and the archives where you can looks at manuals, box arts, advertisements, official artwork, and design documents. The layout isn’t as impressive as something that Digital Eclipse does but its still well done. It seems like a lot of love was put into this collection. I love the main menu’s artwork and even the game’s Switch logo is neat.

Marvel MaXimum Collection is such a cool thing. It seemed impossible that these games would ever come out again (because of licensing issues). It was a real miracle that this collection came together. It also might prove that there are no impossible retro collections!

We can’t wait to share with you our review of this game. We plan to play it a bunch more and then render a final judgement. Though, right now, this Marvel fan is very happy!

Thank you to Overload PR for providing digital code to us. Marvel MaXimum Collection is now available on Nintendo Switch.
