New Nintendo Game Pricing to get Mixed Reception
Nintendo put out a short release today talking about pricing for both digital and physical games, starting with the brand new Yoshi title and extending into the future. For digital only players this news will be a positive. Physical owners, however, might be less enthused.

Starting with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo will now have separate suggested prices for digital and physical titles. This game in Canada will be 84.99 CAD for the digital release, and 99.99 CAD for the physical release. This is a whopping 15.00 CAD difference, one that will make people think twice about buying physical.
Said Nintendo,
Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games.
It will be interesting to see how this announcement is heard by fans around the world. Digital only players will love the option for cheaper titles; those who prefer physical titles might feel a bit let down by Nintendo. The question is, should they be?
There is an inherent cost to producing physical media – the media needs to be created, it needs to be shipped, it needs to be sold, and people along the way require payment for their services. This does create more cost, and less profit, for Nintendo. As someone who plays almost completely digitally in 2026, I’m happy to save some money. My friends who love to collect games? One called this the beginning of the end.
This move is bound to drive some on-the-fence physical cartridge owners over to the digital world, and as that happens, the demand for physical Nintendo titles is going to drop. At what point does it drop far enough that physical media for NIntendo games in late 2027 or into 2028 and beyond don’t even exist anymore?
It is a possibility, but only time will tell. All that said, I think this is a positive move for Nintendo.
