Dragon Quest 7 was originally released on the PlayStation 1. Then it had a remake on the 3DS. And now, Square Enix has completely remade Dragon Quest 7 again. In fact, they’ve reimagined the game. We were lucky enough to review the game, thanks to Square Enix, for Nintendo Switch 2. Is this reimagined version worth checking out?

In Dragon Quest 7, you play as a character that you can name in a small sea-side town. You are best friends with a prince who is always looking for adventure. The prince, you, and your friend Mirabel find adventure with a mysterious shrine full of tablets that need to be restored. With each tablet restored, you go back in time and visit places long ago. After each adventure in the past, new islands will appear in the present. Each place you visit in the past feels like a chapter in a book and it all adds up to the larger story of Dragon Quest 7.

The story in this version of DQ7 is a lot like previous versions, though there are some new elements and some that were taken out. Its a very good story, and it feels more streamlined in this version, while still giving the player plenty of room to explore and battle monsters!

The battle system in Reimagined will feel very familiar. Its a classic Dragon Quest turn-based battle system through and through. Though the battles feel a lot faster in this version of the game and players can quickly go from exploring to battles. What makes it even easier to make this transition is that there are no random battles on the world map or in dungeons. You will see enemies wandering around and can avoid them or fight them. There are random battles as you sail the high seas though. Those battles still go pretty quickly.

The gameplay feels similar to what was found in the 3DS version but also feels, like the story, more streamlined and user friendly. The menu system is definitely improved a lot and players can easily equip items to their characters and when you can do it, changing jobs is so easy. DQ7 Reimagined feels like a game that players old and new can jump into it and enjoy. It plays really well on Nintendo Switch 2, with any load times being super quick and no noticeable issues on the system. It plays well docked and undocked, although we personally enjoyed the game most in handheld mode.

Perhaps the biggest difference between this versions and the other versions is Reimagined’s graphics.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined looks closer to its PlayStation 1 version while also being a more three dimensional game. The game takes on a more overheard look for its gameplay and its graphics are a bit cartoon-like. The visuals are fantastic especially during battles, with the enemies looking better than they’ve ever looked. The main characters look good too and so do all the environments that you explore. This game is really detailed.

Also there is lots of voice acting, especially during cutscenes. Its really good voice acting, although not everything is voice acted. The music is really great too. Overall, this is the best version of Dragon Quest 7 yet.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined streamlines the storyline and the gameplay to make this game even more accessible than previous versions. It keeps all the charm and beauty of the Dragon Quest series too. The graphics on this game are really wonderful. Add to that fantastic voice acting and the series trademark music and you get one of the best Dragon Quest games ever. We love the HD-2D Dragon Quest remakes, however this style is even better for the series. We’d love to see Square Enix do more reimagining’s in this style.

If you’ve never played a Dragon Quest game before, you can easily start here. If you have played one before, you shouldn’t miss this reimaginging, even if you played the other versions. This is a fantastic game and plays great on Nintendo Switch 2.

Thanks to Square Enix for providing a digital code for this review. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is now available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
