Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Demo Impressions

Dragon Quest 7 was first released on the PlayStation 1. Much later, it had a remake on the 3DS. And now the game is back again with Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, another full remake that will be on various systems this time. We checked out the recent demo for the game on the Nintendo Switch 2 and have some thoughts on it.

This week a demo was released for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. I had previously played the game on the 3DS and loved it. So I was excited to check out the demo of the newest version and see what I thought of it. Here are my thoughts:

Dragon Quest 7 on the 3DS was a good game. The graphics were good and the gameplay was good too. I liked it a lot. However, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, so far, is an even better game.

Let’s talk about the Reimagined’s graphics first. The style for this remake isn’t HD-2D. Instead, the character’s look like dolls and the environments you explore are like diorama’s. The style is similar to Fantasian Neo Dimension, also published by Square Enix although Dragon Quest 7 looks even better. The graphics are really beautiful and detailed. I especially loved how the characters and the enemies looked during battle sequences. I also love how the game quickly loads from battles back to exploration and everywhere else inbetween.

And yes, let’s talk about the battles. The demo is around four hours long, give or take, and after sometime without battles you will find yourself in the classic turn-based battles of Dragon Quest. The battles are fast paced and the menu system is streamlined and easy to navigate. Honestly thats true of the menu system outside of battle too! The menus are easy to get into and out of and look really good. Battles are a lot of fun. I think its great that there are no random battles in this game. You see the enemies wandering around on the map and can, sometimes, avoid them. Dragon Quest 7 is a real treat for the eyes and the ears.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined also has a fantastic soundtrack. The demo music is typical Dragon Quest but sounds better than any of the other games. Also this remake has voice acting! The voice acting is really good.

The demo is a great taste of what the full game is likely to be. It introduces the characters, the story, a bit of the world and shows you battles, the music, and more. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a ground up remake of this classic game and it is absolutely wonderful. I loved every second of it. I did not want the demo to end.

I love the HD-2D graphic style and gameplay but I think Dragon Quest 7’s graphics and gameplay are even better so far. If the full game is this good too, which I think it will be, than Square Enix has found yet another amazing way to remake some of their classics. I’m continuously amazed by how Square Enix can bring back some of their classics and make them feel like totally new games. I can’t wait to play more of this one!

Have you tried out Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined? What did you think of it?

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined comes out on February 5th, 2025 and will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 and other systems.
