Rekindling my Love for the Age of Empires Franchise

I have been a fan of the Age of Empires franchise ever since the original launched so many years ago. Playing as the Egyptians, the Assyrians, and the Greeks was a blast, but things only got better with Age of Empires 2. While I don’t think anything has quite captured the feel of the second game, the entire franchise has been overlooked in my opinion, and has offered amazing experiences for decades. Since the push to rerelease these games – and on console as well – I’ve rekindled that love for Age of Empires, and I hope it never goes away.

I’m not much of a PC gamer anymore, so a big reason why these games are making their way back into my life is because of their availability on console. I’ve played the remaster of Age of Mythology and Age of Empires 4 on both my PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and the experiences have been phenomenal. Yes, both consoles support a mouse and keyboard, but I was shocked – and pleasantly surprised as well – how well the controller implementation was done. It’s probably still better to play these games with mouse and keyboard, but I’m perfectly OK curling up on the couch with my Christmas blanket, playing these games on console with a controller.

Ideally, with the Mouse Controls for the Nintendo Switch 2, it would be phenomenal to see these games make their way over to Nintendo’s latest console. I think if the games were released on Nintendo Switch 2, it would be where I play them almost entirely. The screen with kickstand makes the perfect small computer, and ideal for trains, airplanes, and even my work desk at lunch!

Either way, I’m back into Age of Empires in a big way, and with lots of sales happening across Steam, Xbox and PlayStation, there is almost always a good time to grab at least one of these games!
