Get Over Here: Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Thoughts
Back in the 90s, no one had ever seen a video game like Mortal Kombat. It was a fighting game where you could kill you opponent and do it in a, at the time, very gruesome manner. The game took off and is now one of the most popular fighting franchises. Digital Eclipse did a Kollection of the games along with a documentary. We checked it out! Is Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection a must buy?

When I heard that there was going to be a Mortal Kombat collection of games from Digital Eclipse, I knew I had to have it. I already had Atari 50, Tetris Forever, and TMNT Cowabunga Collection from them and absolutely loved them. So yes, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection was a must. I bought it recently on sale for Nintendo Switch 2 and now I have some thoughts on it.
Right away when you start Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection, it grabs you. The design of the menus, the sound, everything just feels so right. And unlike Atari 50 and Tetris Forever, this game starts with a menu that puts play at the time. It wants you to go and play the games first. Of course, I had to go check out the documentary first and you do that by selecting The Krypt.
In The Krypt you have three choices: Documentary, Kombatants, and Music Player. The documentary section is lined up much like Atari 50 and Tetris Forever’s timelines. You first select from sections and then go through a timeline full of videos, pictures, animations, and of course games. Digital Eclipse upped its game with Mortal Kombat’s timeline! There are more videos and other things to discover than possibly Atari 50 even. Thats saying a lot because theres a ton of stuff in Atari 50.
The video content in Legacy Kollection is especially impressive. They talk to the creators of the games of course but there is so much behind the scenes footage from back in the day. One of the coolest things is that we get to see footage from when they filmed the live-action fighters. Its amazing content. I’ve looked at so much of the first timeline and only discovered 71% so far. 70% of the second one.
My percentage is much lower with the other timelines. I need to investigate them more. I should take my time and go from the start to finish but I get impatient and find myself wanting to go to different eras and see what else the game has to offer. Of course the documentary isn’t the only impressive thing about Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection.

The music player is pretty impressive too. You can listen to music from across several game from the franchise and also pick favorites and save them to listen to later. You can also continue to listen to the music you are currently playing even when you leave the music player to go look around at the rest of the game.
The Kombatants section lets you look at the various fighters from multiple games and shows them and gives some of them mini-timelines that tells about their progress throughout the series.
Perhaps the most important section is the Play section. First you are presented with Offline play, Quick Match which is online only, and local communication where you can play with someone who has the Kollection nearby. I couldn’t try out the online or the local but of course I played offline.
Offline mode presents you with an All section where you can check out all the games, an Arcade section, Console, and Handheld. This the best place to go if you want to play any of the games offline and skip over the documentary. Though perhaps my favorite area is the documentary!
Also I should note that there is the Kombat Kard too. You can access this from the main menu and it’ll tell you how long you’ve played, what your versus status online and offline are, what your favorite games, characters, and stages are. You can also save replays and access them here. Its a pretty cool section and reinforces the notion that the developers absolutely hoped that players would play the games and enjoy them a lot.
Overall, I love Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection so far. It may be Digital Eclipse’s best Kollection yet. Though, Atari 50, Cowabunga, and Tetris Forever are pretty awesome. Digital Eclipse just continues to get better and better at creating these games. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
So what am I saying? GET OVER HERE. Play this game NOW. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played a Mortal Kombat game before. You can try them out here. You can even turn off the blood if you want…though you’ll be missing out if you do! Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is really awesome.
Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and other platforms!
