Octopath Traveler 0 Demo Impressions

The Octopath Traveler series has been the leader in the HD-2D style of games since it started. We reviewed the second game in the series (link please) and liked it a lot. And soon a third game, Octopath Traveler 0, will be added. A demo is now available and we checked it out.

Octopath Traveler 0 will be coming out on December 4th, 2025 for Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 (among other systems). A demo was released for the game yesterday and we checked it out on the Nintendo Switch 2. Here are our thoughts on it.

In the Octopath Traveler 0 demo, you start out by creating your character. The character can be male or female, have different styles of hair, eyes, etc. Then you choose what the characters background will be, which includes what style of fighting they will start off with, and what initial three items they’ll carry. Once you start the game, you’ll find yourself in a small town and life will be fine for awhile, until its not. We don’t want to give away what happens but things will change drastically and thats when the real game begins.

Octopath Traveler 0 is very different from the other games in the series. Previous games had you picking what already made character and story you wanted to play. There were multiple characters and stories that eventually came together. This game however just has one story and one character. Though you’ll definitely meet people and have them join your party.

The combat in Octopath Traveler 0 is a lot like previous games. Its turn-based and you’ll use boosting to help you deliver more powerful attacks against enemies. If you played the previous games, the combat will be very easy to jump into. If you haven’t played Octopath before, the demo has plenty of tutorials to get you up to speed.

One thing that’s very new to the game is town building. We won’t tell you how you get to the town building but eventually the demo will get you there and you’ll be able to get a taste of what its like. You’ll have to gather materials around town and the world map to be able to make houses and other things. You just have to have the materials and once you enter the town building, select where you want to place a building or object and then place it. The building mode is very easy and we’re pretty sure its going to be super addictive.

The demo lets you invite some people to town, get some houses and other places built. Of course you’re just getting a taste of the town building. The demo isn’t going to show you the whole quest to build the town. We definitely wanted to play more of it.

There are other quests available in the demo too but we focused on town building. You don’t have to. You can go off and try other quests or just do random battles to level up your characters. Once you get through the initial story introduction, the demo sets you free to do whatever you want for the rest of the three hours. Of course it places limits on how far you can go into the various quest lines.

As for the demo’s graphics, they are very good. HD-2D continues to look better and better with each game that Square Enix puts together. The demo is a visual treat and the voice acting is pretty good too, along with the music.

The Octopath Traveler 0 demo is well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the series or if you’ve never played one of the games before. None of these games are connected to each other, much like Final Fantasy. We enjoyed our time with this demo a lot. The town building is fun and the combat and story are excellent. We can’t wait to get our hands on the full game!

Octopath Traveler 0 comes out on the Nintendo Switch, Switch and various other systems on December 4th, 2025. The demo is available now.
