Catching Pokémon Legends: Z-A

We’ve been playing Pokémon Legends Z-A since it came out recently on Nintendo Switch 2 and thought it was time to finally share our thoughts on the game. Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A fun? My thoughts are below, but you can also check out Adam Roffel’s full review of the game as well!

I’ve been playing Pokémon ZA on Nintendo Switch 2 since the launch week. I hadn’t originally planned to get the game but some friends absolutely loved it and I figured I had to get the game too. So what do I think of Pokémon ZA so far?

Pokémon ZA’s story is pretty typical for this series: you end up becoming a Trainer and have to catch Pokémon and fight other people in order to level up and of course save the world. Though the city setting and its history does add a unique flavor to this game. The characters are all really interesting too.

As for the gameplay in ZA is a bit different from a lot of the other games. This is not a turn-based Pokémon game and its also set entirely inside of a city. ZA is almost as far from an open world Pokémon game as you can get. That said, the game is a blast. Its a lot of fun so far.

The city in which the game takes place is pretty big. There is a lot to see and do around town, from visiting wild zones to shops to buy things from to Pokémon centers and things get really wild at night with lots of fights. Even though ZA isn’t an open world game, it sometimes feels like it is. Meanwhile, the fights are very different but fun.

Combat in ZA is real time: you press some certain buttons for abilities and your Pokémon will attack the enemy. There is a little charge time between use of each ability. You can quickly switch to other Pokémon too. Since its real time and not turn-based, you have to think a bit quicker and try your best to keep your trainer out of the way of fights because if they get hit, then they’ll black out and go to the nearest Pokémon center. No trainer dies but the setback can be annoying. So be careful!

The combat is pretty fun and sometimes feel very strategic. You still have to know which Pokémon is the right one to use on another one. Catching them can be tricky too. Its easy to lose Pokéballs but thankfully there is a system in place (a person) where you can get lost balls back. The gameplay is different from other Pokémon games but also familiar enough so that fans will still enjoy it and newbies will be able to dive right in with no problems.

Also I’d like to mention that this is one of the best looking Pokémon games. It looks great on Switch 2 and there are barely any load times. Pokémon ZA is a really good. I still think Brilliant Diamond is my favorite Pokémon game but from what I’ve played, ZA would be high up on my list of favorite games in the franchise.

What do you think of Pokémon ZA?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is now available on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
