More Thoughts From Me: I Love Spooky Season

Its Spooky Season again! Halloween is this week. I thought I’d talk about some of my all-time favorite spooky games again and some of my recent favorites.

Happy Halloween is this week. I love this time of the year. I’m a huge fan of spooky video games (and movies and books). So I thought I’d talk about some of my all-time favorites again.

During the PlayStation 1 era, I got my first glimpse of the Survival Horror genre. I remember playing the first Resident Evil over at one of my dad’s friend’s house. I had never seen live-action actors in a console game’s opening before. And then there was the gameplay. She was almost a Jill Sandwhich!

Resident Evil led me to Silent Hill. It was such a spooky experience. The fog and the creepy town where nobody was around and then suddenly…you’d get attacked by some random horrible creature. Then you’d solve puzzles and try to find your way out of the nightmare. It was amazing.

I also really loved Resident Evil 2 and 3. Dino Crisis was neat; I’ll never forget being hunted by dinosaurs. There were so many cool Survival Horror games on the PS1. Though the genre didn’t stop there.

In more recent years, I played Alan Wake 2 for review and loved that game. It was spooky but also had enough humor and weirdness that it kept it from being too dark. It was almost too dark and then there’d be a dance sequence.

I also got to play Cronos more recently. Cronos is a game set in space thats also a horror game. Its a bit like Aliens. It also feels like an old school survival horror game: you pick up a lot of items, solve puzzles and walk around in dread of something jumping out at you. Its pretty scary! It gets a high recommendation if you’re looking for something a bit newer and scary to play this Halloween.

Of course I also just enjoy having some light spooky fun too. The Luigi’s Mansion series is perfect for that. My favorite game of the series is Luigi’s Mansion 3 but I did enjoy playing the second one again on Switch. And this coming week, the first game in the series, the hardest one by the way, is coming to Nintendo Switch Online’s Gamecube section for Switch 2. So exciting.

Halloween is my favorite time of the year. I’m so happy to revisit all the old memories and of course make new ones too. What are your favorite spooky games?

More Thoughts is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Happy Halloween!
