Checking Out the Dinkum Demo

Awhile back, some friends of mine were telling me about a cool sim game that they were playing on PC. It was called Dinkum and they liked it a lot. I wished that it was on the Switch. Finally, during the recent Direct, Dinkum was announced for Switch and a demo was released. I checked it out and here are my thoughts on the game.

Day 1. I move to a small island and set up a tent.
Day 2. Creepy lady asks me to do stuff. sigh
Day 3. I set up a tent for visitors.
Day 4. Creepy guy tries to sell me stuff.
Day 5. Today, an alligator bit me.
Day 6. I put my campfire right outside of my tent and stepped into it. I am now on fire.
Day 7. I went for a swim. Some weird fish poisoned me.
Day 8. I have a spear. Be afraid.
Day 9. I go for a swim, get too far out, lose all my stamina. Am I dead?!
Day 10. I wake up the next morning. whew. Well. Here we go again…

Okay, so maybe thats not the exact order of things but its all true. Living on that small island is extremely dangerous. whew. Dinkum is a simulation game where you’re putting together a town and the recent demo that released, which I checked out, lets you experience the early days of the game.

The demo for Dinkum gives you a bunch of days to play. I haven’t finished the demo yet and I’ve been able to get some different licenses to hunt, fish, dig, and more. You get rewarded with points for doing various things, even for passing out. The game isn’t Animal Crossing, all nice and cozy nor is it really Harvest Moon. Dinkum is its own thing where you can create a town and explore a big open area.

Fishing in the game is a little more challenging than Animal Crossing but not by much. Its also stunning that you can hunt and kill animals, plus they can hunt and try to kill you. There are many other things to do that I haven’t even gotten to yet. I know you can build stuff and you can even be vehicles to get around the island better. This place is huge!

I’m currently addicted to this game. Its not as good as say Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon but its a neat game and I like how the world isn’t safe. There are so many surprises in the demo alone and I’m sure the full game has even more.

However, I do wish the days worked more like Animal Crossing than Harvest Moon and that the game didn’t have stamina. You can run out of energy pretty fast in this game. Other than those two nitpicks, Dinkum is a lot of fun. I hope I get to play the full game when it comes out.

The demo for Dinkum is currently available on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
