It’s looking like it’s time to revisit Plants vs. Zombies: Remastered
There were many opportunities to walk down memory lane this fall at PAX West 2025, but one of my favorites was the demo of Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted. I loved the feeling of nostalgia, balanced with the remastered HD graphics, integration of features from across different platforms…. And to be honest, I learned that there was so much more to the game than being a peashooter and shooting zombies (which was clearly enough to occupy hours of my playtime in the past 15 years I’ve played Plants vs. Zombies.
Back in the day. I played Plants Vs. Zombies I played short couch play with my kiddos, in our living room, on the XBOX. I also remember watching them play Plants vs. Zombies as one of the activities during sleepovers. This franchise is such a part of our gaming world, that I’ve seen it pop up in arcade cabinets at arcades and gaming conventions. Even the swag and design of the arcade cabinets show the delightful nuances and generalizable audience of this classic, made anew.
I’m a tad embarrassed to admit that I never even played any of the other elements of Plants vs Zombies, beyond the pea shooters. It turns out that there are so many aspects to the potential strategy. Not only are there over a dozen ways to fight the zombies (exploding walnuts, sunflowers, landmines, and ways to light the projectile peas on fire). They’ve also added aspects of the environment that can affect your likelihood to survive, such as cloudy days that can make your struggle against the unpredictable waves of zombies even more delightfully chaotic.
And if all that’s not enough, for you killers and completionists, they’ve added a new mode for “perma-death” mode, for bold individuals who beat all the other levels. I have a feeling that will not be me.
What I’d say, friends, is if you are someone who is:
- looking for a fun and exciting couch co-op game
- looking for a fun local PVP game
- looking for a revitalized sense of nostalgia
- thought you mastered the original game(s)
- interested in seeing how you can manage strategy and killing zombies
it’s looking like it’s time to revisit Plants vs. Zombies….Remastered.
