LEGO Fortnite Battle Bus Review
When the Lego Fortnite sets were announced, my kids were super excited about the Fortnite Battle Bus. All of the other Fortnite sets were very much displays sets, made for the most part to be put on a desk to be like that. But the Battle Bus, that was a set that could be played with. With tons of mini figures, and a really great build, it was sure to be a hit among collectors and young Fortnite fans. But with it’s decently hefty price tag, is it worth your time? Let’s take a look!
Unlike the other sets available for the Fortnite lineup, the Battle Bus is the one set that I look at and say, “This could be a great set for any kid, regardless of whether they like Fortnite or not.” And I think after getting this built, that argument rings true. Have you ever been to a LEGO store and built your own minifigures from the bin of parts they supply? You know what I’m talking about – pick a head, torso, legs, hair or hat, and accessory. All of the Fortnite characters included in this set – outside of Adventure Peely perhaps – feel like characters you could have made yourself at the LEGO Store. Throw in a really cool bus with a hot air balloon that lets it fly, and you’ve got a nifty LEGO set, regardless of the branding.
That being said, the branding here definitely helps. My kids are, and have been for a while, Fortnite fanatics. They know the characters, the bus of course is instantly recognizable to them, and they know the names of every character in the box without looking at the box itself. I don’t know how many times I had to hear my 10 year old say, “We have this skin too, dad!” Fortnite is basically foreign to me, coming onto the scene long after I would have had any internet in it. But my kids love it, which makes this Fortnite-LEGO partnership so brilliant.
Unlike the Peely Bone review we did, where we said the set was VERY complicated to build, my 10 year old was able to construct the Battle Bus all on his own. Stickers included! He struggled with a few things, and the repetitiveness of putting clear window panes into the bus windows almost made him quit for a while. But he pushed through and had the entire set built after just a few hours. Nothing was overly difficult, but I don’t think, and he never asked for help once. That is either a sign that he’s getting older, or the set really isn’t that complicated. With previous reviews, he has almost always asked me at least once for help, but not this time.
At just under 1000 pieces, the 129.99 price tag (Canadian) might feel a bit steep for those who like to get close to that 10 cents per piece price. However, there is a ton of value here that shouldn’t be overlooked, including almost a dozen mini figures and some really great, hard to find and unique pieces for your LEGO collection. For example, those large balloon pieces are not something you often find in LEGO sets, so it’s nice to get them here!
This is a very awesome recreation of the Fortnite Battle Bus, and one that promises hours upon hours of play. My kids have been enjoying the LEGO DreamZzz sets we have been reviewing over the past month or so, and I talked at length in those reviews about how much fun they have had. Those sets have been mainstays on the basement floor for weeks now, getting played with at least a little bit every day. This Fortnite Battle Bus has been the centre of attention for hours upon hours, day after day. The kids are using pieces from their LEGO buckets to recreate parts of their favourite Fortnite maps, and then using the Battle Bus to drop their characters in for the fight.
Watching them recreate the world of Fortnite on my basement floor has been a joy to watch. We love to disconnect our kids from electronics as often as possible, but I never thought a video game could be the catalyst for so much creative thinking. As we work through reviewing the 4 Fortnite LEGO sets that were sent over for review, one thing is becoming very apparent – the value in these sets is outstanding, and may just be the best bang-for-buck sets LEGO has released in a long time.
