TONOR TC-777 USB Microphone Review

Thanks to our friends over at Tonor, we had the opportunity to look at the TC-777 USB Microphone, a budget USB mic that can currently be purchased from Tonor directly for under $50, and is a great microphone for anyone starting out in the recording space, whether that be some audio for a music track, or perhaps more appropriately, for a podcast.

Over the last few weeks, I have been using the TC-777 for a variety of purposes. I’ve been using it to record a yet-to-be-released podcast, for work calls, and even just for fun with the kids, to see what funny things we could say into the computer and then manipulate with software. So, despite only having it for around 3 weeks, we have really put the device through its paces.

First and foremost, I think it’s important to acknowledge that this is a budget microphone, and to expect it to match alternatives that cost a few hundred dollars is not only unrealistic, it’s also incredibly unfair. In my opinion, this microphone should be reviewed based on it’s features and price, as opposed to the overall quality (which, mind you, is incredibly eye opening, because of the price).

During each call I had – whether for work purposes, or when I was playing games online, I specifically asked folks to rate my audio quality, compared to two others options – my iPhone headphones and microphone, and my latest Astro headset. In all situations, the audio was more than acceptable for those having to listen to me, and outperformed my headsets. Right there, in my opinion, is a good reason to perhaps use this microphone for work related calls and/or for streaming games online. It’s cheap, performs well – and the included filter works well too! – and is arguably one of your better options at this price point.

What I really liked about the TC-777 is how easy it is to setup and use. It’s legitimately a simple plug-and-play. Whether plugging into my laptop, or my iMac, I had no issues using it within a few minutes of plugging it in. The included manual is helpful to learn in the ins and outs of the device, but is not necessary for getting things started. Although not unique to this Tonor microphone, the easy accessibility of getting it started is fantastic and very welcome, especially to a new microphone user such as myself.

It’s the overall quality of the audio that ultimately wows me, and that is partially due to the design of the device. Tonor takes every precaution to eliminate unwanted noise, including using a solid stand with rubber feat, a shock cradle for the microphone, a pop filter, and a plastic and wire grill cover over the mic itself. All of these features drastically reduce unwanted noise in the house, of which there is plenty at mine.

For the price, there really isn’t a reason not to pick up this microphone from Tonor, especially if you are starting out in the podcast or online gaming space and want to ‘try it out’ before committing with more expensive equipment. But even if it looks like you are working from home for the foreseeable future, this microphone will make a great addition to your home office, instantly improving the audio quality of all your future calls.
