Skellboy Review
Why is it always a dashing knight who saves the day? Either that or Mario. Why can’t a skeleton with changeable parts save the day? Well, in Skellboy for the Nintendo Switch, thats exactly who the hero of the game is: a skeleton who collects body parts! Could this be another good game for the Nintendo Switch? Here is our review of Skellboy for the Nintendo Switch!
Skellboy, at first glance, will remind players of Paper Mario. The character is paper thin, so are the enemies and some of the environmental pieces. Skellboy is a very nice looking game! And it isn’t just a Paper Mario clone. It has its own very unique identity.
You won’t find a turn-based battle system in Skellboy. Instead, the combat is all action based. The main character can select a weapon and just hit the enemy with it. Its very easy to change between weapons on the fly. Oh and you can change body parts on the fly too.
As the skeleton protagonist defeats enemies, said enemies will drop body parts. Then those bodies parts can be picked up and will automatically apply themselves to the main character. Pick up a head, a body, or feet. Sometimes body parts will just be laying around too. It sounds gross but the cartoony nature of the game makes it very tame. No blood or guts in this game!
Skellboy is game that almost anyone could play. The controls are very easy. Everything from the combat to the body swaping is handled in an easy to pick up and play manner. That doesn’t mean that the game is always easy. There are some pretty tough boss battles! You can run into some tough minor enemies too. Skellboy is definitely a case of easy to learn, hard to master.
Not everything is perfect about this game though. Skellboy has a very noticeable framerate problem. When the game stutters, you will notice it. Sometimes when you enter a new area, the game will stutter and pause. This is not a game breaking problem but I hope that the framerate can be fixed in an update or two.
Finally, Skellboy’s story is nothing special. The game does have some funny dialogue but the story could be better.
That all said, Skellboy is still a pretty great game. The graphics are very well done. The gameplay is pretty fun too. Skellboy is a game that Nintendo Switch owners should check out.
Skellboy gets a 8.5 out of 10.
