Turtle Beach Recon Spark
Turtle Beach certainly has been busy. It seems that every time I turn around they are releasing a new headset or other console accessory. I would say this is getting frustrating, but it seems that every new product they release offers something just a little bit different. Instead, I would argue that they might have just figured out a perfect system. Just when you might stop thinking of Turtle Beach as being at the forefront of gaming headsets they release a new one that is different enough to qualify as a unique offering, but also serves to remind you that they are very much still relevant. How does the Recon Spark hold up to this formula? Let’s take a look!
The Spark is the latest addition to Turtle Beach’s ‘Recon’ lineup of headsets. The ‘Recon’ lineup are a value-tier wired headset line (as opposed to the ‘Stealth’ lineup that is wireless) that offers a variety of styles and colours for gamers looking to get great value without spending $100+ on a headset.
The Recon Spark stands out as the only member of the Recon line, and possibly the only Turtle Beach headset in general, to sport a white and pink – sorry, lavender – colour scheme. For me, it is about time.
In 2019, gaming unites everyone; the young and the old, men and women, and people of all nationalities are getting more involved with PC and console gaming. With this shift, it only makes sense for companies like Turtle Beach to start offering a wider range of options in their products to appeal to these new demographics.
Aside from its striking appearance, the Recon Spark offers the same multiplatform compatibility as its fellow Recon members, with memory foam ear cushions with Turtle Beach’s patented ProSpecsTM Glasses Relief System for next-level comfort and a metal-reinforced headband for added durability.
High-quality 40mm over-ear speakers offer a superior dynamic range to help you hear better than ever, while the on-ear volume controls allow you to adjust on the fly. Also featuring a flip-up mic that doesn’t get in the way when you aren’t using it, the Recon Spark truly has all of the features one would hope for in a value headset.
When compared to the Recon 70, it is quite clear that the spark is a much sturdier design, particularly at the join between the ear cup and the headband. Memory foam ear cushions are also quite an impressive addition to this headset, as they make a world of difference over the synthetic leather alternative.
I am not certain how effective Turtle Beach’s patented glasses relief system is, as I have gotten used to the pressure of my glasses being pushed against my head over the last 20+ years of gaming, but I applaud the effort to address comfort issues such as these. At the very least, I am sure that having less pressure on your head overall must be at least somewhat more comfortable.
Overall, the Recon Spark is a new take on a winning formula for value headsets and offers everything you would expect, from on-ear controls, to memory foam ear cups. While the features alone might not be enough to get anyone to hand over their existing headset, the colour scheme itself will likely win a few people over.
