Top 5 Course Maker Elements in Super Mario Maker 2
Last week, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker 2, the sequel to the sensational course-creation game in the Super Mario universe. Super Mario Maker 2, like its predecessor, allows players to build their very own Super Mario levels using a plethora of the core elements from 5 different Super Mario game styles. As there are so many elements to choose from that it can be quite overwhelming for new Makers, we’ve broken down a list of our 5 favourite elements to make the most out of your courses!
5. “? Blocks” with items
Just as in any regular Super Mario level, the Course Maker allows you to place “? Blocks” that contain items. Simply place a “? Block”, place an item beside it and then drag the item into the “? Block”. You will know you are successful when an exclamation point appears in the block.
4. Slopes
Highly underrated, slopes can add texture, difficulty or just plain fun to your level. Providing a long, steep slope for your players to slide down while popping a bunch of Goombas off the map adds a calm yet entertaining section of your course. Don’t rely on flat terrain alone!
3. Keys
Keys are a fantastic way of forcing players to complete a challenging section of the course before continuing or rewarding those who go the extra mile with a special bonus. Either way, a good course maker knows when and where to place keys to elevate their level.
2. Hard Blocks
Hard blocks are blocks that cannot be broken, regardless of what is thrown at them. This can be used to section off complete areas of the map, stop an enemy/trap or provide an area of safe passage for players to stand on. Again, the options here are only as limited as your imagination!
1. ON/OFF Switch & Blocks
The ON/OFF Switch and corresponding blocks is by far my favourite element in the Super Mario Maker 2 Course Maker. These switches allow you to swap back and forth between two sets of blocks that are only solid when the switches are in one of two positions. When used properly, these can change the feel of a level entirely by creating a unique challenge for players with requirements of timing and precision.
