How CTR Nitro-Fueled Perfectly Executed A Remaster

It is very common these days for game developers to release remastered versions of their older games. Typically, the games selected for remaster were revolutionary and wildly successful. In turn, the franchises selected are typically (but not always) those that have not received as much success since this breakout title. While Crash Bandicoot remains an iconic character, there really has not been a game as appealing as the original Crash Team Racing within the franchise. Considering that release was almost exactly 20 years ago, it seems the ideal candidate for a remaster.

Instead of a reskin/re-render, CTR Nitro-Fueled has been built from scratch with the singular goal of creating a game as true to the original, but for 2019. I must say, they knocked it out of the park. For those interested, there are some direct comparison videos on YouTube that will show you just how well Beenox executed this tricky remake.

For now, suffice it to say that all of the maps, characters, and gameplay perfectly mimics that of the original game, but with the high-poly count character models, dynamic shading and high-resolution textures available today.

The game still retains its cartoony appearance and it absolutely brings you back to the old days of CTR, or Diddy Kong Racing, for those who are more familiar with that title. CTR Nitro-Fueled has similar driving mechanics, the open-world driving between races – complete with your friendly tiki guide to remind you when you inevitably try to enter an area you are not yet qualified for – and all of the characters you know and love from previous games in the franchise.

While CTR Nitro-Fueled goes a fantastic job of recreating the old, Beenox was also not afraid to add a few new measures as well, the most noticeable of course being the customization. Players can now swap between a variety of carts, wheels, paint jobs and decals, all of which just add that extra bit of fun as completionists aim to collect every part and casual users craft their perfect ride.

All of this combines to re-create an experience that will please both returning fans and newcomers alike, something rarely achieved by a remastered title.
