Very Excited about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

It’s been less than a year since we got the phenomenal Assassin’s Creed Origins based in ancient Egypt, and Ubisoft is wasting no time getting another Assassin’s Creed tittle out the door in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While there are subtle changes from Origins to Odyssey, a lot of the great features introduced last year are coming to this year’s installment, and a whole lot more. While many are criticizing Ubisoft for seemingly returning to the yearly AC launches, I’m really excited for another major, open world experience!

I’ll be fairly frank here: Assassin’s Creed Origins is easily my favourite Assassin’s Creed tittles. When reviewing the game last year, I said it was a close race between it and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, but after nearly 10 months of playing the game, I’m firmly placing Origins above the rest. And from what we’ve seen in captured video, Odyssey is looking to be a step above yet again.

Not only can we play as either a male or female protagonist – I’m team Kassandra personally! – but the game is bringing back naval navigation in ways unlike Origins. In Origins, you could often pilot small fishing boats, but the opportunity to take one of the triremes out for a spin was missing. Now you can, with an entire army too boot! And you’ll need this capability, because there is a lot of water on the one side of the map in Odyssey, and you’ll want to avoid swimming – sharks! – to get from island to island.

On top of having the choice in characters and the ability to sail boats once again, a new choice mechanism is being brought into the franchise to give players more control over the story of their characters. While we cannot comment yet on how that might affect the game, having choices is a nice, subtle change that could make this feel fresh yet again.

I couldn’t be more excited for the launch of this title, and hopefully we will have every opportunity to review it when the times comes. I’m really hoping that Odyssey tops Origins in every possible way, and although ancient Greece doesn’t get me excited like ancient Egypt did – personal preference – I’m still pumped to see Ubisoft bring this world to life!
