Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs Brings Strategy, Adventure And Humor to the Nintendo Switch

There are so many strategy rpgs coming out all the time for the Nintendo Switch and other systems. Most of these games take themselves very seriously. There’s nothing wrong with that, however it would be nice to have some more humor in these games. Enter Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, a game that blends strategy rpg with humor and some Text Adventure too. I got a review code of this game and have played it some. Here are my thoughts so far on Regalia!

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs never takes itself too seriously. Ok, it doesn’t take itself seriously at all. For instance, near the beginning of the game, the main character of game eats the ashes of his grandpa and then his gramp’s ghost shows up to chide him. Yes, it sounds gross, but its very humorous. There is so much in this game that is funny and/or just plain odd.

That said, Regalia has interesting gameplay too. The game is, after all, a strategy rpg. The battles on the surface will remind you of a game like Fire Emblem. Regalia has a very different menu system then Nintendo’s strategy rpg though. In battle, when you press the ZR button, a mini-menu comes up with skills that you can use to either protect yourself or fight back against the enemy. There is no healing in this game at all.

The battle system takes a bit of getting use to. I’m still struggling with it a little. The battles are definitely unique and can be pretty challenging. There is a mode where you can focus on the game’s story over the battles. I haven’t tried that mode yet but will definitly do that before my review.

Regalia isn’t just a pure strategy though. The game also has a dose of Text Adventure game in it. There are some points in the game where you’ll be reading about some situation that your group gets into and be offered choices. These points in the game are pretty neat. I love old school Text Adventure games, so I enjoy these sequences a lot.

Without a doubt, Regalia isn’t what I expected it to be. When I saw the previews for the game, I thought it was a pretty straight forward strategy rpg. Instead, while it is a strategy rpg, it also places a lot of importance on a funny story, with cool Text Adventure elements. And I haven’t even told you about the city building element…(gotta leave something for the review!)

I have no idea what my final review of Regalia will be, but for now, I am liking this game. I look forward to seeing what happens next in the game!
