More Thoughts From Me #88: Switch Indie Game “Madness”
Last week, I was going to write about third party games. Instead, I wrote about the Adventure games coming to the Switch. This week…well, I have to admit I’m starting to wonder if the Switch even needs third party games! Don’t get wrong: it would be very nice to see more third party games come to the Switch, however, have you seen how many games came out for the system last week? And this week? Plus we have Super Mario Odyssey coming up soon. So does the Switch really need third party developers? Also: will the Indie game “madness” ever end?
There are a bunch of games coming to the Nintendo Switch this week including Axiom Verge, Stardew Valley, Oxenfree, and more! Oh and last week we got Steamworld Dig 2, Golf Story, and more. This is such a crazy amount of Indie games. I’ve never seen anything like it before on a Nintendo system.
Indie games get announced for the Nintendo Switch all the time. Some of them get announced and then all of sudden they have a release date. Its very impressive, but it also makes you wonder: is there room for third party games on the Nintendo Switch?
With so many Indie games on the Switch, does it really matter if more third party games come to the system? Yes, in fact, it really does. Indies are great and they always offer a huge variety in genres (just look at this weeks offering of titles!). Third party developers, on the other hand, focus on bigger games in genres that Indies either don’t cover or usually don’t do very well in. I’m talking about first person shooters, sports games, music games, and big budget action & rpg games.
The Switch absolutely could use Final Fantasy 15, all the new Dragon Quest games, all the big EA games (though I doubt that’ll happen), and more. Having those games on the system won’t take attention away from the Indies. The big budget releases come out slower than the smaller eshop releases. So having big budget third party and a ton of eshop indies along with Nintendo games is going to make the Nintendo Switch a must own system.
I’m amazed by all the Indie games coming to the Switch lately. I doubt every week or month is going to be like it has been lately, but it does look like a steady stream of hit Indie games will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. This “madness” is not going to end! We have a lot to look forward to!
What indie games are you going to pick up? Let us know in the comments!
Next week: Golf Story! Everybody is buying this game for the Nintendo Switch. I bought it too and I’ll have some thoughts on the game next week.
