More Thoughts From Me #24: A Different Take on Metroid

Metroid Prime Federation Force will be coming to the 3DS next month. This new Metroid game is very controversial with fans of the series because Samus is not the main character of the game. Some people say they like the look of the game anyway, while many others wish that Nintendo would cancel the game. What do I think of Metroid Prime Federation Force? I’ll tell you!

I remember when Nintendo showed Metroid Prime Federation Force off for the first time. It was during the Nintendo World Championship that the company showed a game called Blast Ball. We had no idea at the time that the game would be part of a new Metroid Prime. We did know that the game looked similar to that series, but nobody connected the dots (some people claimed that they did after it was revealed though). And then, when E3 started, Nintendo revealed Metroid Prime Federation Force and that Blast Ball was a part of it. I was surprised and so was everyone else!

I have to admit that I didn’t like the look of Blast Ball. I’m not a sports fan, so the concept of a futuristic multiplayer soccer game didn’t appeal to me. The game didn’t seem to have very many fans when it was revealed. When it was revealed as part of Metroid Prime Federation Force, many people didn’t like the concept of the game. I wasn’t very impressed either, but I do think that the game might turn out to be interesting anyway.

I like the idea of Nintendo expanding the Metroid universe. Yes, I like Samus like everyone else, but we know that there is so much more to the Metroid universe and I think it’s a good idea to show more of it. Also, the first person gameplay definitely looks a lot like the Metroid Prime games, which I liked, and the game is said to play better on the New 3DS too! I have a New 3DS now and so that makes me interested in this new Metroid game. I’m not sure why people are surprised that Nintendo would do something different with Metroid. Nintendo almost always tries new things with their games.

Nintendo is constantly reinventing their games. They don’t want to do the exact same game over and over forever (unless it’s the New Super Mario Bros series). Unfortunately, a lot of Nintendo fans wish they would do the same games over and over. The fans don’t like changes. Though, if you look at how many people criticize the New Super Mario Bros series, I think you’d see people complaining about the same thing over and over too. You can’t please everyone. That’s not really Nintendo’s job though. Nintendo is here to create games. They want you to buy them, sure, but Nintendo isn’t a company that won’t take risks. Nintendo is a risk taking company, sometimes that pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. Look at all the different systems they have done! Federation Force is just a different take on Metroid. If it succeeds, we’ll see a sequel of it. If it doesn’t, then it’ll be shrugged off as a failure and Nintendo will move on to another take on Metroid.

I hope Federation Force is a good game and that it does well. We haven’t seen a portable Metroid game in awhile now. And the series could certainly use some reinvention after the last Metroid game! Here’s hoping that Nintendo will continue to be company that can take these types of risks.
