Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC

Bethesda games almost always have varied DLC. Small packs – horse armor anyone – to large expansions, this company really does understand how to add value and extend game play experiences. Just like they did with the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion, Bethesda has released a similarly large DLC offering for Fallout 4. What did we think of the Far Harbor DLC? Read on to find out.

Although it is not the nicest place to visit – is any of Fallout 4 really? – the island you get to explore in Far Harbor is massive, full of unique new characters, quest lines, and moral decisions. While this DLC pack is not unlocked right away, the second you reach (around) level 20 and run into Nick Valentine, you will be sent to the island to investigate the whereabouts of a missing individual. It’s not a unique idea, but it works to tie the new area into the overall game.

The ‘main quest’ that is included in Far Harbor will have you making decisions on which of three rival factions will control the island: the Far Harbor townspeople, the Children of Atom cultists, or the synth refugees. Trying to decide who is right and who is wrong in this ongoing conflict will leave you to decide on a number of important, moral problems.

Far Harbor is also littered with side quests of varying degrees of interest. Some are great, some are duds, but all will give you what you want – loot! Mind you, everything you get is not always valuable, but some interesting things can only be found here, so exploring the island and taking on the various quests is worth doing in the end. A full quest guide readily available online might help you pinpoint specific quests if you don’t want to complete them all.

Far Harbor also introduces puzzles to the Fallout universe. Through some crafting and ‘base building’ you will need to bounce lasers of appropriate targets, and the only way to do that will be through some difficult base building techniques. The puzzles are difficult, but if nothing else, the satisfaction of completing them is almost worth the effort alone.

Obviously, new areas come with new weapons and armor, and while most of it seems fairly standard – the fishing theme is very present – the Harpoon Gun is something that shouldn’t be missed.

Overall, Far Harbor is worth picking up for those that want to add to their Fallout 4 experience. With a bunch of new quests, fund and imaginative puzzles, and new loot to collect, the downsides present in Far Harbor are far outweighed by the positives. Sure, that damn fog is annoying as hell, but once you learn to cope with it, moving around becomes second nature!
